Title: When did metal go pop
Post by: donovan.x on June 20, 2009, 09:42:57 AM
I need a rant!
I usually like to chill out on the weekends eat cold chinese, watch Kerrang or Scuzz and get inspired for some days good guitar playing, OH MY GOD!!!! What is going on with Kerrang, nothing inspiring there, its turned into a pop channel, Madina Lake, Elliot Minor(who I would love to destroy with a rather large military device), and f***in' Metro Station, there are others but my brain is starting to go soggy!! What has happened? And Pendulum I dont hate them but are they Metal/Rock or anything close, I just dont get it any more.

We need some new bands who aren't affraid to spit, shout, rock the f**k out and cause some major controversy.

 :x
And the worse offenders 3oh!3 aaaarrrrghhhhhh!!!!! It's electro pop not METAL!!!!!!!!

I stopped watching music channels a few years ago, same reasons.
Other than when I'm at a mates house, and for Aerosmith I air drum :D Also noticed Steel Panther on there too.
Airbourne also proved a bit of a change from the usual cr@p too

Yeah Airbourne are pretty good. And Gallows are massively popular at the moment, and they're great.

Gallows are great but they dont get 1/2 the exposure that all these Emo/Electro pop bands are getting.

When record companies started drooling their commercial slime all over it....

Even former 'underground' record labels like earache started to be commercial as hell if you ask me.

Early 90's? At least bands like Death and Metallica got old and poppy at that time.

Take Vader for instance, their first demo was so insanely brutal and then they got snatched by earache who totally cr@pped their first release IMO (ultimate incantation).

Still the kids seemed to enjoy the synth athmo stuff and the 'shows' rather then the brutality of the metal gigs before that time.

Anyway things change and so they should.....

Err, it's been like that for years, IMO. Utter crud.

Though what I think's utter crud might be your idea of heaven...

Just to clarify, when I said pop I meant pop as in Britney Spears and Backstreet boys sounding, pop as in explodes, the music business seems to do that all the time but (heavy) music has become so diluted, I havn't always liked every new genre, when Nirvana blew up I didnt like them but they made sense, they had loud guitars, Kurt Cobain was obviously far from boyband material but you get these new bands, Elliot Minor are probably the best example and it is just image and worse than that its the sort of image you find on some of the shitety pop channels, I know music changes but metal/rock/grunge/Nu Metal etc have all had serious attitude and great songs, something missing from these pissy little puss $%&#ers that now polute what has always been an outsiders genre, Kerrang and the 'scene' in general need an ice age of seriously heavy shite to wipe this vomit inducing pop bollocks from the face of PLANET METAL once and for all.

DEATH TO ALL BUT METAL! :band1: PDT_007 PDT_029 PDT_045 :tfrag: :gib: :chain: :enforcer: (I just found the more button for emoticons)

i don't know what's more annoying, the lack of decent rock/metal bands, or the fact that when a half-decent band with good players finally comes along the lyrics are so puerile that I can't even listen to it.

And I like that metro station song, it's hilarious.

Hi Dave ^ how is the metro station song hilarious?
Title: Re: When did metal go pop
Post by: donovan.x on June 20, 2009, 05:45:15 PM
I do obviously appreciate that popular music has it place but my main gripe is if I feel like listening to it I will go and turn on a pop channel, leave the heavy music channels heavy.
Title: Re: When did metal go pop
Post by: dave_mc on June 20, 2009, 05:46:15 PM
^ yeah, exactly. the pop channels by definition are meant to play what's popular.

ah, so you haven't played my patented "Who's more lame, the pasty one with the telecaster or the one with the red trousers" game?

but it's just ridiculously catchy. I hated it at the start too, but i heard it so much i started to like it
Title: Re: When did metal go pop
Post by: donovan.x on June 20, 2009, 05:52:31 PM
LOL pasty one! I see what your saying but usually the metal channels play was is popular within the heavy music banner and this is my main issue, I dont get the connection between Metro Station and heavy music, yeah they have guitars in the video but so did Busted but they where on the pop channels out of harms reach.
Title: Re: When did metal go pop
Post by: Henk on June 20, 2009, 06:13:57 PM
And how often they still promote bands with the frase "old school death metal".........

Its just that the public changed, morons in the moshpit... I wish that didnt happen but on the other hand im glad i chose a different direction for myself, i dont think i would be the right person to be an 'idol'  :wallbash: of some sort.

DEATH TO ALL BUTT METAL!

Yeah - death to BUTT METAL

Yes - but it kind of leaves the door wide open for other talented bands of that style to come along and get attention
It also reminds people just how freaking good that 80s stuff was in places
Most of the Steel Panther album is blatant steals from Bon Jovi, Extreme, Poison, Warrant, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden and Yngwie (solo in Asian Hooker) and others , but it is so well put together

Their album has 12 songs - all of which have enough hooklines and melodies  to keep you singing along (even if you dont want to)

Yes the lyrics may lose their novelty after a while , but the tunes are very catchy
And I think the band show a genuine love for the music they play and the bands which they pay homage to in humorous ways.

This version of Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil is as good as any performance that I have seen Motley do of their own song (I am a serious Crue fan and have been since 1982, so it's not faint praise)

Have you read The Dirt? I've read it a few times now and still find it very entertaining each time I read it.

The SP album arrived this morning. On first listen I must say that I like it! Great playing, great tunes although the lyrics are a litle immature (but funny!). I'll admit that I don't own any 80's albums of this ilk - I was a little too young. Maybe I'll go on a spending spree and buy some!

Is kerrang meant to be a rock or metal channel, though?

If the Kerrang! channel reflects the content of the magazine, I gave up on it many years ago when it devoted itself to pop-punk and emo.

Anyway, I've never heard of any of the bands you mentioned in the first post, so I may as well just accept I am OLD and relax.

Now I'm going to listen to some Wishbone Ash.

I just got the new Chickenfoot album and the new UFO one
Am playing them as much as I can to get the tunes in my head prior to the gigs next week

To be fair I'm a bit disappointed in the UFO one - there is just nothing particularly catchy on it
Previous ones : you are here and Monkey Puzzle were a bit quicker to grab hold

I like Vinnie Moore but the album lacks the character that all the old Schenker and Paul Chapman ones had
He has really fluid playing but no hooklines you can latch onto

Agreed about the UFO.  And I find Phil Mogg's lyrics quite annoying too - why so many Americanisms?!

I like Chickenfoot - wasn't too keen on the first couple of tracks I heard, I thought Satch's playing sounded too slick.  But he actually does some really nice bluesy rock stuff on the album.

That can't be serious, surely?   You can't completely change musical styles that many times in one song.  No wonder the girl looks so distressed.

And constantly squatting down like that can't be healthy - someone is definitely going to poo himself at some point.

I did like the bit at 0'59" where the guitarist and bassist lift their guitars over their heads and go "Wooo!".
Title: Re: When did metal go pop

LOL ^ You said poo themselves and I laughed out loud! I watched the first 5 secs or so and though hang on whats he on about these guys seem ok and then it happened, another band to add to the list!
Dave you ask if Kerrang is Rock or metal, as I always saw it, it was both but sadly the bands I have mentioned are neither!
You guys have made me feel better though as I know its not just me and that this stuff is truly f+@#in' awful.

I don't really watch TV fullstop anymore. Kerrang and MTV2 used to be great; found a lot of bands through both but they seemed to have diminished in appeal lots since. I haven't seen a good new band (imho) in ages, let alone metal. Last new band I found that I liked was Bright Eyes I think and that was a year or two ago.

All good new metal is unsigned - Ergo, not on Kerrange and Mtv2.

Metal bands are learning not to sign their lives away to shite record contracts, when they can produce it themselves, and organise tours with decent promoters etc.

No it isn't, but most of the stuff which is signed is on small labels.

There are more good new metal bands now than there has ever been. There's just also more bad new metal bands.

Realistically however, f you're watching Kerrang and Scuzz then chances are you've been out of touch with anything other than mainstream pop metal for a long, long time. No apologies for elitism.

On a similar not check out Brokencyde and their song Freaxxx
Theres heaps more gifs of Attack Attack floating around. Cant search for them here though, will post tonight if nobody else does first

one of my favourite recent metal bands would be 3 inches of blood.
awesome 80s vibe but still keeping it current, theyre not trying as hard to be pure 80s, they just like riffs. I hear the guy that does the low screams has gone, i reckon this could make them sound a bit better though, some of his stuff seemed outta place.

Because haircuts sell music. Look at the majority of 80's glam rock acts. Everyone ripped the piss out of them for a while, then eventually they were mainstream darlings selling out stadiums while the rock press were still holding their heads in their hands, now they're laughed at by nigh on everyone outwith guitar forums.
