I was watching my friends band and their guitarist broke a string.
rather than him spend time stringing up (and forcing everyone to listen to their singers banter) i offered him my les paul custom with Rebel Yells.
he was using a stock Epi les Paul Custom and a DSL100 head.
I have to say, that just swapping to my guitar made his sound so much better. I've never really heard a direct comparison like that on two similar guitars. i guess when swapping my pickups out i heard the difference but with the work time between its not as impacting.
i do get worried about lending out guitars. like my mate says, you'd lend someone a johnny, but you wouldnt let them use your willy!

I would think that might depend on the lady in question 8)
I lend guitars out quite a lot to people I know who will not abuse them, though usually they come with me. Years ago when I was still working in a music shop and only had 2 guitars, I would let my friend use my Les Paul Custom as his backup and he woudl let me use his 335 as mine. However we also both swapped mixing duties depending which band was playing, so we were both at all the gigs.
-
i do occasionaly lend them to my good friends, usually as a sort of swapping arrangement.
-
To good trusted friends only.

In my house we just sort of use eachother's guitars as we please, and I'm fine with that, but I'd NEVER let anyone else even touch one, let alone gig one.
-
I'm happy to invite friends round to try out any of my gear, but I'm not sure I'd lend any of it out. Certainly not out of my sight, I look after my gear, and I guess I'm a bit precious about it.
It would also depend on the event, if it was a big deal for them, playing to a potential scout or big audiance then I'd be more willing, but playing to the Friday night binge drinking crowd, unlikely.
-
I've lent my acoustic to people at open mic nights many, many times (odd really, given how much sentimental value it has for me), but I've never lent any of my electrics. I probably would, but the situation has never come up.
-
i would lend my les paul to friends only. i'd be more liberal with my LTD. i once leant out a jcm900 and the mate i leant it to was soundchecking, and their drummer put a pint of water on his monitor, which vibrated off and fell into my JCM!
SUCKS!
anyway, new tubes, new fuse... away it went!

I remember being (in the audience) at a local bands night where one of the guitarists had to borrow a guitar from another band for some reason. He was bashing it about, hitting the cymbals and all sorts.
I don't know if the owner actually minded or not, but I thought it was very disrespectful.

"That mark is where he hit the cymbol, that one where he hit the cab, and those marks are where I took out his teeth."

If they're round my place, with me in the room, I'm happy for anyone to have a go (5 year-olds, whatever - parents get scared, but I say "if she dings it, it's my fault". I do have a rather clumsy nephew, who can actually play, when he gets over-excited I rely on his mother's "carefull!!!" attitude to get him off it again ).
I'd also probably be up for someone using one of mine for a jam round my place.
BUT - no way does anyone use one of my guitars in anger (a rehearsal or a gig). Even if they don't hurt it, a guitar always feels different somehow after someone else has performed with it. It's like you've gotta re-teach it how to behave...
And Dmoney, would you really lend someone a johnny? I might donate one, but I wouldn't want it back again!
-
I dont because I dont really trust anyone else with them. Even my good friends are quite rough with their guitars, so I'd rather not let it go out of my sight..
-

dude, what happens on tour, stays on tour! :D

Oh yeah, and you don't want to lend me your guitars... even as little as 30 minutes noodling is enough for me to completely rot your strings
-
I don't know anyone well enough to lend them my guitar, plus I don't know many near me to lend too.
-
I only lend out guitars to those I can completely trust with it.
same goes for amps. Someone who never touched a tube amp in his life, sure as hell won't touch mine. I've seen idiots plugging in and out without putting the volume to zero and leaving it running idle without switching to stand-by.
-
If I have some mates round for a jam I let them borrow my guitars when we're jamming, don't think I would lend them out for gigs though.
-
I have lent a few out for gigs. A friend of mine has my Richwood LP with Coldsweats in right now and I have his Bass. I do trust him though.
-
Yeah.
Not the top shelf stuff, but I'm happy to lend a more everyday guitar to anyone that I know well enough to know they arent a dick and it'll be in good hands (I dont need them to be my bestest friend).
-
Never have, never will.

+1, I let a guy use my amp at a band's night thing, and as we were on last, and he was first, I went off for a bit, came back, and he had his bass plugged into it, then went on to change all my settings around, screwing everything up... lol.
-
yeah I wont lend amps either unless they definitely know how a tube amp is meant to be used. I dont think many people realise that they shouldn't be turned on without the speakers plugged in. The other guitarist in my old band did it all the time. Somehow it hasnt broken his DSL yet, but his tubes do wear out quickly..
-

can I lend a guitar MDV?
I never lead guitars to anyone - the guitars I have now are the ones that have stayed with me for years and are THE ONES. I'm not letting anyone mess with that, nor do I want someone else's sweat on my baby, urgh!!!

mate of mine used to lend out his DSL.
it got broken 3 times that i know of.
snapped off jack lead in the input... water over the power tubes... more tube related failures...
AND a tech ripped him off every time he had to get it fixed. and nobody who broke it gave him money.
UN-F*cking-LUCKY

Sounds like your friend needs to stick up for himself more.
I've lent my Herbert, my drum triggers with Module and a signal splitter to a local band on separate occasions, it's cool because they're getting places now and would help me out with gigs a bit if I was in more of a position to play. However, I dropped the signal splitter to them and they keep saying to me *I* can pick it up when I want. I done them the favour, they should drop it back right? I can't use it now anyway but I thought that was slightly disrespectful.

i let a friend play a gig once with a flying v i had, that turned out ok. but, i let someone borrow an overdrive pedal, a morley wah and a four track portastudio. 10 years later i finally got the two pedls back, the overdrive no longer working, but the portastudio seems to have gone forever. i doubt i'd use it again, but it wasn't cheap, and he didn't seem the least bit bothered that he'd lost it, or that he'd broken the overdrive pedal. he actually seemed really annoyed that i wanted my wah back!

Every now and again at a gig, someone comes up and says they are either a guitarist, bassist, keyboard player or drummer and demand to be allowed to play an instrument and show us how its done. It never ceases to amaze me how pushy they can be when they have had a few and are egged on by their mates. Mostly it is drummers and my drummer is a very surly individual and he makes it quite clear that they should go away. I usually try to remain polite and just tell them that we are paid to do a job and we have a set we are doing and "we don't have time" etc but I have had to be a bit blunt at times. I get offers of being shown how to play some songs that I might have fobbed off a request for too and some get offended by a refusal. It really p*sses me off when they do it mid song too but I am going off topic.

Only twice to my best mate he asked to try my V which had Crawlers in at the time they put a right smile on his face. I sold him the Crawlers when I sold the V. Then he tried my Les Paul which has Mules in loved that so he bought a les paul and stuck the Crawlers in it. He also has aPRS which has Rebel Yells in. Result another convert to the fold

Those are the worst.
I won't even allow those types near my stuff.

That is exteremely rude. I think I'd be severly pissed off, and probably quite unpolite!
