Title: Good 2x12 cabs
Post by: mikey5 on June 24, 2009, 04:55:33 AM
Hi my cab experience is limited to Orange, which I think makes great cabinets. They are really steep though is there an option just as good but perhaps better priced. I understand that nothing good costs nothing, but if there is a chance that one of you know some great secret to this that would rule. I like the closed back type. Is this is done with 2x12 cabs ?

THe Laney GS212ie cabs are the best value, good 2x12 in the UK at the moment IMO. Solidly made, all ply, great handles, reasonably light weight. THe tolexing is not the best out there, neither is it terrible. The Celestion 70/80's in them are not the best speakers, but neither are they bad either. Overall, it's a great little package.
Outside the UK, the price of the GS212ie makes them less attractive though. Aren't you in Mexico ?  or have I got that all wrong ?

I actually have one of them loaded with greenbacks available if you're interested, although that would have to be within the UK I'm afraid.  :(

If you're UK based, also look at Matamp and MJW....

Zilla cabs in London made me an oversized 2x12 I'm really happy with.  I wasn't sure if I wanted it open or closed so I got a 3 part back on it with a removable middle section.

Marshall 1922 and 1936 cabs are solid and very easy to mod (just done a speaker change on a 1922 and it's great) come up second hand a lot at really really good prices.

I just let a 1936 go for £100 because I bought it so cheap.

Obviously it comes down to personal prefernce and all that, but IMO the 1922 is probably the worst cab ever designed and constructed. It is so boxy and beamy it defies belief.  The 1936 is a little bit better, but once you've tried a decent 2x12, you'll wonder why anyone ever buys all these 1936's that seem to rush out of the showrooms. (all in my very humble and obviously personal opinion !)

A +1 on TF's suggestion of MJW and Matamp if your budget will run to it.

Quote of the day!

I have a Marshall 1922 2x12 and it's terrible lol. Seriously -- avoid Marshall cabs like the plague!

I live in mexico. I am a volunteer worker. But I travel to the States at least 4 times a year. I am right about to go up. I want to sell my Orange TT and 1x12 so I can buy a ceriatone or something bigger and better. For 50 watts I figured I would need something 2x12 ish or might as well. Yea I wont be going to the UK any time soon unfortunately all my favorite beers come from Germany and the Uk Thanks for the suggestions.

Actually would a 50 watt amp sound terrible through a 1x12? I mean would it sound loads better through a 2x12?

It will sound fine.  Just make sure you get a speaker that can take the power if you intend to crank it!

I would suggest a Celestion Hot-100 as a good option.

Avatar cabs seem to be superb value and well thought of in the States.

If you go to the US the best option would be a Mesa Rectifier 2x12" IMO. They are cheaper there than they are in Europe.

I use an Engl screamer head into an Orange PPC212 Guitar Speaker Cabinet, Black.

Very good tone indeed.

Not had much experience with any other amps or cabs.

Feel free to make a quick comment if someone uses a similar setup.

Thanks

Although it's open backed , the Blackstar 2x12 is good ; solidly built , two Vintage Thirties . I use one with a Vintage Modern head in small venues and am happy with the sound .
