Title: Back to BASS-ics
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on June 27, 2009, 01:23:19 PM
It's been a while since I posted any new projects on here
Partly because a couple of the last ones had no-BKP pickups (at customer request) so didn't seem to start threads on the BKP forum with them.

The other things I've been busy with are these beautiful basses

First up is a replica of John Entwhistle's Spider Bass

Then there is the 5 string Thunderbird style bass we made

Ok - here is the other guitar we made - another Lion (but with P Rails)

+1!

Its been on your website for ages and I now know why! Wow!

BTW, how's the plant/repair/damaged wall thing coming along, is it all tip-top shape again?

Here is that T-bird with it's alternative pickguard
Looks a bit more classic with the white in some ways

Compared to the black....

They all look great. I think you should post all your finished gear regardless of pickups

Killer! I would be proud to own a Feline!

Those guitars look great. Whilst I prefer my basses to be Fender like, that T'bird does look the business.

All those guitars look fantastic! Especially the Entwhistle Bass.
Excellent work on them all!

Lovely, especially the Thunderbird.  I can't decide about the scratchplates - maybe a matt/textured black to match the pickups?

I LOVE that thunderbird! Have a bit of a soft spot for those and Firebirds.

Think I prefer the white on it, but bwb could look a bit classier to me rather than just the solid black it seems to have now.

those basses look great (and i don't even play bass  ). I agree that the white scratchplate is nicer on the T-bird :)

Yes - discused the scratchplate with the owner of the bass
We have a template for it so he can order whatever colours he fancies.
He wanted the single ply black , but we'll happily make him a B/W/B or a tortoiseshell or whatever

It's a pewter colour that can look a bit blue under certain lights - see below

We've used it quite a bit in the past
This is a similar refinish we did a long while back to a Jackson Fusion that we built a new neck for - looks very gun metal here

That Lion is one of your finest I think! Love the finish, and the single tone and volume pots.

The birdseye on the Explorer is outstanding :o

I like the Thunderbird! better with the white pickguard

can we see back of the lion...and p-rails?

You trying to get me into trouble?
Here they are:

The back of the neck and body were oil finished for a natural feel - not unlike the finish on the explorer we did for Tim
Text is from my website:
Quote
Firstly the neck was a bit slimmer to suit his hands
He wanted an oil finish on the back of the neck and chose to have it all over the rear of the body too whilst enjoying a painted finish on the front and headstock

For pickups he chose to try Seymour Duncan's P-Rails design - giving both the option of a P90 style pickup and a single bade from a Hotrails design
The mini toggle switch allows rthe player to chose from 3 modes - Humbucking, P90 single coils , and RAils single coils
this works really well giving sounds that cover a wide spectrum from Fenderish clean, through a Gretsch like tone and also a conventional Les Paul type sound
With the standard 3 position pickup selector that gives 9 sounds

Bridge and tailpiece are TonePros and the tuners are Sperzel.
We fitted an Earvana compensated Tuning nut as well

i was just going to say a tortoiseshell one would be interesting.

It was quite hard for me to say that as i hate tortoise shell nearly as much as abalone and PRS guitars

Very nice stuff again.

When I first saw those P-rails I thought those could never be any good. Then I heard Joao Erbetta play a guitar fitted with those. I must admit, I was impressed.

Not that I would ever swap a real P90 or Filtertron for one of them.

Customer has the Spyder bass now (in Germany) - he's in a Who tribute band

Sent me a picture of him with it and a cool comment
Quote
Hi Jonathan,

had the first rehearsal with the Spyder yesterday.
It was really jawdropping, both for the guys but also for me.

The sound is simply awesome.
It has a definite Spyder sound, with maybe a bit more bottom, very thunderous if you want.
But due to the Buzzard electronics it is much more versatile than the Alembics.
A wooden Alembic sound but with all the variety and possibilites of the Buzzard electronics.

And it is much more sensitive to my different fingerstyles and positions.

Thanks so much again for this.
We have to think about the next project......

I'm well chuffed naturally!

Isn't that the best possible thing for a custom guitar builder to hear?  :D (I may be about to say the same thing... ;))

Awesome, Jonathan - and there are a whole lotta controls on that beast!!!

There's something 'odd' about a German in a Union Jack jacket   :?

Tut tut tut, That would be "Union Flag jacket", it's only a Union Jack at sea :)

Sorry it's a piece of information I picked up from Dr Who and it's the first chance I've had to use it :D

Looks like Dr Who may not have it right, it was 'officially' changed in 1908,

Interesting, thanks for the info. Thankfully my faith in the Doctor remains as it was Rose Tyler who came out with it, I mean you can't trust anyone who's had a previous relationship with Chris Evans can you?  :D

On topic though I love the work that's gone into the bass, I'd love to see some more thru-neck Felines, maybe some of their superstrat style guitars.
