Title: New pickups
Post by: bucketshred on April 25, 2005, 07:47:47 PM
Hey there!

Firstly, played on the Warpig last year at the London Guitar Show, nearly wet my pants, you guys where the stars of the show, really.

Second post on the forum and I need some advice, sorry to be a pain and all that.

Currently I'm playing a Lite Ash Strat (w/SD's, maple neck etc) through a Ashdown Fallen Angel 60W combo, Digitech Bad Monkey and Morely Bad Horsie.  I'm currently in a hard rock/metal band where the rhythm guitarist is playing a Les Paul through the same amp, it's just that he is going to get some Warpigs.

Just wondering if I could get some high output single coils that would compete with his tone.  I liked the sound clips that Hayden posted with his Strat, sounded ace, just looking for something with a bit more *crunch* and cut for the leads, especially over a bass heavy rhythm player with high ouput pickups.  Just remember, I gotta have those single coils, just something a little more special to them (to my ears anyway).

Anyhoo, thanks for any help at all and I hope that I'll enjoy my stay on this forum.  Sorry for rabbiting on a bit :D

Andy!

Generally for more cut you need to look at lower output singles like Irish Tours but I think the Trilogy Suite singles that Hayden was demoing would do the job.
The problem with single coil pickups is you can only go so far before you lose too much top end. Haydens are pretty much on that limit and I wouldn't want to push it any further-saying that they've gain for days and virtually play themselves 8) .

One thing to bear in mind is how these singles do cut through most mixes. Not because of the high end but mostly because of the frequencies they produce. So far these ones I use have managed to sneak through even the most jumbled of mixes . I'm sure Tim could explain why this is so better than I could.

Damn, you were supposed to jump in with some complicated amperage, resisteance, elastictrickery stuff there! But yes...midrange it is :)

Right, after listening to Hayden's clip over and over again I know I definatley want some of these, now!

Shame I won't have £165 to spend on them at the Guitar show, I'll just have to make do with visiting the booth.

If I get enough time off during the show I'll be hanging around BKP a little and I'll have my Strat with the custom pups with me. You're more than welcome to give it a try and see how they sit with you.

Cool, sounds ace to me mate, thanks a lot :D

Just look for a big bloke, probably wearing a Hendrix T-shirt, that'll be me.

It'll be even more accurate if there is a Skinny bugger with an Emo haircut hanging around with me.

Failing that, I'll PM you my number tonight or nearer the date.

Andy!

I should be easy to find. I'll be tied to the Korg/Vox stand for most of the show :)

It was a mixture of a bit of luck, knowing a couple of good people, and working hard. Like anything else really :)

You don't really have to be a 'MONSTER' player. Just competant and confident in your demos.

But you are a MONSTER player, that demo of the Trilogy Suite pickups was phenomenal.  I'd love the tab to some of the licks.

If I could play that fast...

(wait for it)

...I'd be able to play really fast...

..But I'd probably wet my pants too!

I'm confirmed for the Saturday date of London Guitar Show btw, see you all there and make sure you have some Basses on show this year, I'm bringing a funky bassist with me and he wants to get funky!

tips for playing blues btw -

get your hands in blues shape by putting them in a meat grinder, the firery caverns of a volcano and the jet engines of a fighter plane!

now your ready to sing about how you sold your soul to the devil at the crossroads for some tasty blues licks!
