Title: pickup output chart
Post by: dheim on June 27, 2009, 05:33:28 PM
i made this just with pickups i actually own... it's a completely useless thing but it's nice to see.

Nice, always good to see some graphs :-)
All you need to do now is produce a tone chart for each ;)

Vaguely related questions:
How do the CS and RY compare? Even remotely comparable? Considering one or the other for my PRS SC (bonus time at work soon ...)
And I never realised the PIG 90 was quite that powerful ... must belt it out!

CS and RY are very close in output terms, but they're very different in tone... they're both bright pickups, but they're bright in very different ways. really hard to explain, though...

Thanks dheim, this chart is actually very useful, I think it might make life just a bit easier for many BKP buyers out there (like myself)...

Of course, as we all know, you can't judge a (good) pickup by its output alone.

Doesn't having a neck MM and bridge MM with very close output cause a huge difference in volume?

Thats great. Except its DCR isnt a direct determinent of output. Case in point - the PK is the second hottest BK, MM 3rd and NB 4th.

Some to add to your list if you wish:

Bridge

BKP-91 8.4
C-Pig 22
Sinner 21

Neck

BKP-91 7
Mississippipig 20

i intentionally excluded single coils from the list (i've got two middle sc), and omitted the C pig because DCR is the same as the alnico model... but what the hell is mississippig? the pig90?

Judging from the output and the name, the "mississippipig" must be a pig-90 in MQ housing.

 You nerd! Seriously, how is that a valuable use of your time!? It doesn't tell you anything useful! DC resistance isn't even always representative of how hot a pickup is relative to another.
I think I can safely speak for everyone who has replied to this thread (including myself of course), when i say 'WE NEED TO GET OUT MORE'.

If you own the pickups that you've put in the graph, what is the point!? You KNOW what they sound like!

of course, but the point of this thread (useless by my own admission!) was just to serve as a reference for DCR values, because neck pickups aren't described on BKP product page, and many people keep asking specs and so on... and i needed a small break from my new guitar testing session! ;)

and most of all i've got a fetish for this kind of graphs...

I agree, the neck DC figures are useful as they don't appear in the specs on the site (even though DC isn't really an indicator of output or tone).

yeah, it's strange how PK's values are relatively low even if confronted to the much sweeter NB... and this is an obvious indication of how vague is such a comparison based on sole DCR readings!

i recall reading the actual number of winds made the tone fat or thin, and the wire gauge mattered as well

so lots of turn of thin wire and not many turns of fat wire would results in the same DCR, but with very very different tones. the first one being very fat with lots of output and the other relatively thin with little output.

hell, even DiMarzio's actual mV values are pretty much the only -real- measurement taken and they aren't that accurate when it comes to judging pickups.

Yup, neck pup wound to match the C-Pig. It's magnificent.

i know it well! it's what i call Pig90, actually... mine is in MQ casing too!
