so, ive done this before...
got it checked, and then had to walk threw gatwick and dump my guitar at the foot of the steps up into the plane, and hope someone put my guitar in the hold...
this time round, im debating buying an extra seat for my guitar, as its actually cheaper than paying to check it into the hold. does anybody have experience of doing this with ryanair???
-
If you take your guitar on a plane in a hard case then you have to put it in the hold, so when I take my guitars on planes I take them in gig bags as they let me take that on as hand luggage. Everytime I've done that though it's been with either EasyJet of British Airways, not sure if Ryanair have different rules or not though.

the musical instrument excess ryanair charge is ridiculous.
buy a steinberger, put it in a gig bag, and then in a suitcase, and then in the hold.. don't tell them!

I think I heard that airlines had stopped allowing people to buy an extra ticket for their instruments. It may have changed again as this as at the height of the 9/11 paranoia.
I'm pretty sure one of the London orchestra’s (Philharmonic?) had to cancel a tour because they couldn’t get seats for their instruments, and they flat out refused to put them in the hold.

hmm.
I'll call em up tomorrow and find out what the deal is.
i've done it before, in feb last year when going to ireland.
well, it went in the hold, not in the cabin. but ill ask about gig bags and hard cases.
anyway, when you carry a hard case threw an airport they make you open it up and that dust for axe for bomb residue.
luckily my riffs are explosive enough without the aid of black powder!

We've recently had this problem, we're playing a festival in Sweden but they wouldnt let us book an extra seat for our instruments, yet it costs something like £60 - £80 to put a guitar in the hold! Day light robbery!
Pretty much double what my ticket cost.

As Ryanair have one of the worst baggage handling reputations I'd fly another airline anyway, seriously, they'd break socks if they could.

Uh oh.... I'm flying out to a festival in sweden at the end of the month..... With Ryan air!
Might take a cheaper guitar than Risking my PRS!

i booked an extra seat for my guitar.
the only thing going in the hold will be our drummers cymbols. so hopefully it'll all be cool.

Do you have to take it in a soft case? I might ask about doing this!
