Title: Cornell?
Post by: DavidRees on July 03, 2009, 10:49:53 PM
Advice please - I am looking to get a small amp for home use [jamming with friends acoustic guitars electric keyboards occasional saxophone] and want a primarily clean sound, nice and simple single channel - no reverb - friendly to pedals [MXR custom overdrive and Carbon copy] 10" speaker but with option to use a bigger external cab if in a bigger room

want quality and reliability and was thinking of the Cornell Romany as the £650-700 price is roughly what I want to spend

any comments advice or suggestions - the guitars I will be using have Lindy Fralin low output humbuckers and Bare Knuckle Manhattan P90s

many thanks

David

hmmm, deja vu... :D Just to repeat what i said over at music radar, i liked the romany plus I tried, but you do have quite a few options from other UK-based boutique makers. :)

I have a Romany Plus and a Plexi Seven (lovely amp also but very much not what you want).  I think the Romany sounds like just the ticket for you, I absolutely love mine.  The power scaling is incredibly useful for playing at home; you can turn the power down to 1/8 watt now (the latest Romanies and Plexis now have 4 stages of power scaling) and I find I use that a lot.  The amps are beautifully made too.  Dennis Cornell is also a lovely man to deal with, he responds to e-mails very quickly, is amazing helpful and even modded my Plexi Seven for free when I explained I wanted even more power scaling than was standard at the time (back in the 3 stage scaling days).  Customer service like that is rare and to be celebrated.  I'm sure there are other boutique manufacturers who also do a great job but I can only comment on the ones I own and they've been a delight.  Frankly I could not recommend them any higher.

Feline is in Croydon - have a look his website.  Not only can you pop over there and bag a bargain amp, you'll get to play some amazing guitars too.
