Title: Secured SPLAWN artist endorsement/ordered amp
Post by: TwilightOdyssey on October 28, 2005, 07:42:52 PM
Well, I was torn between the Matamp 1224 and the Splawn Quick Rod. But, since I can't try a Matamp out until I'm in England, I opted for the Splawn.

Just got off the phone with Scott Splawn, and ordered my amp! Very, very nice guy, and I can't wait to start doing business with him!

It's going to be a Quick Rod, EL34s, black amp, white piping, Rising Sun graphic.

definately - all the boutique Marshall-like amps are in the USA

I'm still working on the amps spec, but the design concept goes as such:

channel 1) sparkling clean
channel 2) gain from classic rock to brown sound
channel 3) Appetite For Destruction tone - modded marshall, extra gain stage etc

and the amp will have a switch to cut the volume output to around 60%, an effects loop, DI out, reverb or delay, and PPIMV as well as a preamp master volume for channels 1 and 2, and then a gain control for the extra gain on tap in channel 3.

Marshall mods will be available for any of the above, as the basic circuit I started from is a 1968 Marshall 100w Super Lead.

how does snakeskin tolex as standard sound? I'm trying to track down some WW2 British camouflage style tolex but it's not easy.

All soundclips will be made with Bareknuckles methinks

Lol - i didnt realise that you were actually going to do this! that rocks!
the circuit sounds great, but i've gotta say that snakeskin as standard may not be the best idea - snakeskin is one of those things that you either love or hate and you'll be polarising the market, which is never a good thing. I'd go with something interesting, but perhaps more universal?

Yeh, well I'm probably going to do this. I could get it up and running in a matter of weeks if I wanted to, but I'm thinking it might be best to wait till I've finished my business degree. You're probably right about the snakeskin, but I definately want to have something on the amp that makes it immediately stand out from other amps - like 'Orange' amps that have orange tolex.

how about like black/red embossed crocadile leather? i've seen this option on a few amps before - really stands out, and also looks quite tasteful (believe it or not).

The Splawn is right in the modded Marshall camp: think Roccaforte, Mojave, etc etc.

Hey Ben, do you mind me asking a question?

I was wondering, as you have these endorsement deals, do you get discounts on the HBE/Splawn stuff nowadays? If you don't mind me asking, I'm just intrigued

I don't mind at all. I think the perception is that companies just flip you free gear; with high end products, I haven't found that to be the case. I have no problem paying for gear that I like. The truth is, smaller, high end companies can't afford to give you free stuff, and it kinda devalues what they do in the first place, imo.

There's a lot of mystique and mystery behind what an endorsment is, and I think that part of it is that there are so many different kinds of endorsements.

Basically, the artist endorses the product, not the other way around. If a company is giving an artist free stuff, then they are sponsoring the artist.
When I endorse a product, it means just that -- I can stand behind their gear with 100% confidence that it will get the job done, road-tested and mother-approved.

Basically, it works like this:
I will endorse their product; ie, use it live, use their brand on mechanical products (like CDs and adverts), and generally "sell" their amps thru performance and recordings in exchange for goods & services rendered by the manufacturer (like custom options with no upcharge).

thanks Ben, thats cool. I think its fair to pay for stuff you like too, although if someone offered me stuff for free I dare say i'd be tempted... :D

and that amp looks killer BTW!

Cool amp TO, nice graphic. I can imagine that being a good combination with the VHII in your spiderweb strat.

I like your attitude towards endorsement, it seems to me that too many people just play stuff because they get it free.

Slightly OT but I read a interview with Santana in the new total guitar and apparetly he gets 4 free guitars a year from PRS. He must have quite a few PRS's hanging about the house by now...

Whoa, I would love that deal!
Of course, I would sell off all the PRS's and have Laz Gajic build me an army of guitars with the money!!!!!!

As for the UK amp building talent...I'll have to agree except for the inclusion of Ashdown and the exclusion of Laney.

too early to say really, and I don't want to hijack TO's thread on his awesome amp endorsement any longer!

check out the clips I've posted in the players section, the amp there is close to what will end up being channel 2

No, I didn't see it ... there ARE good 70s Srats out there, you just have to look around. 30th St Guitars, in NYC, has TONS of old Strats, btw ... ;)

Amp Shmamp, I was digging that cool imperial march (links section)!  Despite my Jewish ancestors, it almost made me want to goosestep!  Hehe, I gotta do one of those sometime, I have the midi and need to port it through powertab...Played for the last time with my Duncan Designed p/u last night with a good drummer, getting my VH2s in tomorrow and can't wait!!!
