Title: Pickup for my mex strat
Post by: Shag101 on October 28, 2005, 08:49:32 PM
Hi Guys,

I finally got my Mex Strat back from my brother and I am looking to upgrade these pickups for something hotter.  I like position 4 the best.  Whereas I am using the bridge/middle with the noise reduction.  I find the bridge by itself sounds horrible.  Maybe its just the cr@p pups in there now.  Anyhow...I was thinking of converting the s/s/s into a h/h.  I hear the Mex Strats have plenty of room....hopefully..lol....
I want to put a set of humbuckers that I could swap over to my SG maybe in the later future..
I wanted a warpig bridge and mississippi queen neck like PhilKing since he says they work very well together.
My question would be how would this sound in the Strat till I change them over to the SG years from now?
The way I see it...I could rather carry a cheap strat to my band sessions instead of my expensive SG, but still have the option to throw them in the SG.

BTW - The MEX STRAT has an all maple neck.  SG has rosewood.

Hey man,

I have a Mex strat (but with a rosewood fingerboard) and there is no room under the scratch plate for change. Have a look next time you change the strings. If you want hot pups go for the Apaches or Irish Tours. Apaches are beautiful in in position 4, thats pretty much all i use. The irish tours sound sweet too, and distorted they are amazing. You can easily fool someone into thinking they are hearing humbuckers when distorted, tis ace.

On my Irish Tour strat (USA, Maple FBoard) i have a 4-way swich with just the brdige and mid pups, they are NOT RW/RP so there is no drop when i use them in parallel (which is how pups run in pos 2 and 4).  This is a cool idea, i love it.

What sort of single coil sound do you want, and what is more important, you clean or distorted sound?? which is easier to manipulate to sound different?

Man, and i just changed the strings this weekend..lol  Next time I will look under the plate to see if I could make some room.

Since I like humbuckers better than single I guess the best single for me would be the one that sounds most like a humbucker.

If there is no room to install a warpig bridge and mississippi queen neck on a custom guard then I guess I will go with the sinner bridge since its a monster and some irish tours for the middle/neck.

I think that combo will have the best of both worlds.  Great crystal cleans and heavy OD sounds.

thanks for the reply!!!!

Y dont u get Uber Sinners. I know Tim has done this before and they make the hotest, most leathal singles ever.

A great idea if your diggin HBs but have nowhere to put em.

Thanks Guys,

I did not take my strings off, but did loosen them and took a little look under the guard.  The neck and middle are way too small but the bridge has a big whole.  I think a bucker could fit in there....

How would a mississippi queen sound in a strat?

BEN!, NEVER USE A HAMMER WITH A CHISEL! Hammers are for fretting, chisels of for slicing tiny slithers out for days until ur neck on your mandolin fits right, but then u relise ur in Iraq and ur mandolin is now a torture pad ur being spanked with! Damn american soilders ;)

OH THE HORROR!

(Btw, that was a joke, but seriously, dont use a hammer and chisel, they should remain seperate)
