I am sitting here trying to learn a new Smith's song and there is a thunderstorm outside.
Is it theoretically possible for a lightning bolt to cause an overload that would travel through the power surge up my amp down my guitar cable and up me brain and kill me?

Have you replaced all the fuses in the house with metal bars?
If this is the case get your ass to a Faraday cage ASAP.
If not I think the best thing to do is to get some rest sometime soon.

haha I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday, so I unplugged the guitar and turned off the amp..

i always stop using electrical equipment when there's a thunder storm around. i think you can be struck on the phone, or in the shower etc. Probably being over-cautious, but still...

Why are you using an appliance attached to a mains outlet in the shower?
EDIT: Misinterpreted your post but unless you are showering outside atop a defoliated hill you would be at no risk whatsoever.

I usually turn the PC off if it's bad though I've never had any problems, I always heard horror stories about PC's blowing with their storms... never really heard of it over here...

this might be cr@p (it's mythbusters- they were testing to see which things were safe to do in electrical storms), but if your house gets hit, because you're standing in water, it'll get you too. also, the shower is attached to the mains etc. too, as far as i'm aware (talking about power showers here).
don't get me wrong, i'm aware it's incredibly unlikely, but people do get struck by lightning. A teenager died last week after getting struck in a park in birmingham (if i remember correctly)... :(

As regards the PC concern I recommend getting a surge protector if you already don't (especially if your power station's output is as unreliable as mine.).

If you're standing in your bath having a shower, then the bath tub will be earthed (well if it's metal). I'd say it was possible to get a current through that.
Although if you are struck by lightning, it would be a good place as it's much better if you're wet. The electric then travels over the outside of your body on the water ratrher than through you.
The electric kept tripping off here yesterday when the lines were being struck by lightning. as hoping it would fry my modem and I would be able to stop working but no such luck.
