Oh YES, got my Feline custom today! :D
The story started when I was at Feline 8 months or so ago for some work on another guitar. While I was there I played some of his guitars. One of them, a white super-strat/RG style design caught my attention.
I didn't really like some of the features (control positioning, ibanez trem, colour), but the neck was probably the nicest neck without "Jackson" on the headstock that I've ever played (FWIW I'm a big Jackson fan, so that's intended as a huge compliment). Lovely comfortable shape, so slick & fast all the way up, huge jumbo frets (immaculately installed, as always). Just a great, GREAT neck.
Unfortunately someone else had put down a deposit on the guitar, so I left the shop disappointed but relieved (credit card could've done without the hit).
Fortunately, that customer later decided he wanted different inlays & ordered a new neck to go on the body. So after a brief discussion about spec/pricing, we agreed that Feline would build a new body to go on the spare neck & make into a custom guitar for me! :)
Every little detail I wanted, Feline was able to accomodate (I went down there & personally positioned the controls exactly where I wanted). I was even able to pay in installments.
The end result looks, feels & sounds absolutely fantastic. Pics will follow later (Feline took some nice ones while I was there). I am very very happy & proud to finally own a guitar with "Feline" on the headstock :)

No pics? FAIL!
Congrats, too, tho I am very jealous!

 Camera's not in the house. We'll have to wait for Feline himself to post the ones he took this morning.
However, I just remembered that he PM'd me a few the other day while he was assembling it after paint:

Interesting volume control location! What's the reasoning behind that?

Interesting volume control location! What's the reasoning behind that?
To get it out of the way of my flailing hand :)
Those who have seen me play may have noticed that I splay the 3 fingers of my right hand that aren't holding the pick (middle/ring/pinky) quite wide. When I'm doing aggressive palm muted riffs that means my little finger clanks into a volume control located in the standard Fender/Ibanez etc position. I find myself accidentally rolling off the volume from repeatedly hitting it, then suddenly the sound goes really thin as I've almost rolled the volume completely down.
I find a lot of off the shelf guitars have the volume positioned way too far forward & close to the bridge pickup for my playing comfort - it's a real show-stopper for me.
Ideally the volume control should be no further forward than level with the back edge of the pickup bezel & a good 1½" down from it.
The problem with doing this on a Floyd-equipped guitar is that it ends up under where the trem arm hangs in a normal playing position so you can't get at it easily.
On this guitar, it's so far back so that I can reach over the trem arm & "roll" it with the blade of my hand.
The 3-way toggle is just far enough back/down that I don't knock it but not so far as to be under the trem arm & awkward to operate quickly.
Have a look at the other guitars in my armoury (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16340.0) - very few of them have a volume pot in the "standard" position (note the blocked hole on the Charvels & some of the Jacksons).
-
That's an interesting point, never really thought about it! :)
I suppose, without thinking, I would've said it's theoretically a good thing to have the volume control within easy reach, but in fact on my SGs, LP Jrs, Teles etc they're actually miles away!
On Strats, I definitely do that thing of accidentally turning down the volume. I saw someone (I forget who) giving the volume control a quick "tap" with his little finger every few seconds, to make sure it was still on 10, so I've tried to develop that as a habit.

Congratulations on the purchase. Looks great.

What does the old holy diver sound lock? Also outta curiosity how many people does the Feline shop consist of?

Looks REALLY good!

There's 3 of us : Myself & Ben (in the Croydon workshop) and Graham (who works behind the scenes prepping wood etc).
We use a couple of guys also for paint finishing, but they are a separate company

Whats it like playing on a scallopped fretboard? I've never actually played on a scallopped guitar before, I imagine it feels pretty weird at first and takes some time to get used to?
Great pics Jonathan, that is a lovely finish!

Woo! As some will know, I am not usually a fan of what I call "pointy super-strat" type guitars - so whole rafts of Jacksons etc are outside of my "let's look at that and drool" criteria... they just tend to leave me cold.
But this one really surprised me - looks fab!
Great job Jonathan, hope you enjoy it Antag...
:D

in general i DON'T like red guitars, FR bridges and H-S layouts... all things that belong to a shredding world that i'm completely alien to... BUT it has got its charm. lot of it, actually... i would love to play it!

Nice. I'd love to bust out some Chris Poland Megadeth licks or some Fusion on that :D

What does the old holy diver sound lock?
My first impression was that it's not a million miles from the new HD - it has a lot of the same full midrange punch, but it's brighter & not as warm/rounded. It has a lot of the clarity/tightness of the Cold Sweat & that snarly "cut" that the Rebel Yell gives you, perhaps a shade less power than CS or new HD. Feline first described it to me as "basically a ceramic RY".
I can see why Tim redesigned it - with the CS available & the RY in development, there were 3 pickups doing that "hot rock" thing in the BKP range. The heavy metal monster that is the alnico HD was something the range didn't have & IMHO needed.
The new/current HD is still my favourite BKP, but I'm glad I have one of the old ones now & it's just about perfect for this guitar.
As an aside, putting a baseplate on the Slowhand neck has made quite a difference (I have non-plated SHs on my Jackson SL3). I still don't think the Slowhand is really "vintage hot" - to my ears it's similar power to the Sultans', albeit tonally a lot different. But the baseplate gives it noticably more power & presence, making it balance better with the fire breathing HD....
Whats it like playing on a scallopped fretboard? I've never actually played on a scallopped guitar before, I imagine it feels pretty weird at first and takes some time to get used to?
Well, it's only scalloped from the 17th up & with very tall frets, you don't really get much fingerboard feel up there anyway. It feels slightly easier to do massive bends & maybe a little faster but not massively different.
I've played an Yngwie strat which is scalloped all the way down & didn't like it. It was too easy to press too hard when fretting notes below the 12th fret & make them out of tune. But on the upper frets there isn't enough distance between the frets for that to be a problem.
IMHO 17th fret upwards is about the optimal amount of scalloping for heavy fingered players :)
Nice! Now go and play it :D
Yeah  I played all afternoon, didn't put the children to bed until well after 8, then I carried on playing :) Had to switch the amp off because it was keeping them awake (& probably getting a bit late for the neighbours), so I switched to my Rocktron preamp on headphones, then eventually was just playing it acoustically. Didn't get to bed until well after 1am.
Had to getup at 5am to get to work early :( so I'm running on adrenalin right now
Can't wait to get home & play more :)
