Title: My new restored Strat
Post by: TheIronBeast on July 15, 2009, 02:23:00 PM
I was given an old beat up Strat by one of my friends about 2 weeks ago and at the time it was pretty much useless. Over the past week and a half I have restored as best as I possibly could.

When I recieved the guitar it had no pickguard or plastics at all so I fitted an old Van Zandt assembley from the late 80's/early 90's that I have had lying around for a years, which sounds awesome I just didn't have the right guitar to put it on. I also fitted a 5 way pickup selector as the Van Zandt assembley only had a 3 way. The body also had a route for where a 9v battery was fitted (yup this guitar was EMG'd at some poiint) which I had filled in. There was no nut so I fitted an old one that I had.

I also didn't really like the vintage style tuners so I replaced them with locking tuners, thanks to Philly for recommending them!

I checked out the serial number and the date stamped on the neck and inside the tremelo cavity and it is a 1982 57 reissue made at the Fullerton Factory. After reading up about these guitars it seems that they are regarded as one of the best vintage reissues that Fender made.

After playing this I can honestly say this is the best Strat that I have ever played. I own a few and this beats them all. It really has that 'one of a kind' feel to it. I love it!

Anyways, enough of me rambling on. Here's some pics!

That looks brilliant, a proper "natural" relic!  :D

And the guy just gave it to you?

yup he just gave it to me. He's not a guitar player though, so to him it was completely useless as it didn't have a picguard or any electronics on it. It cost a bit to restore it, but only a tiny fraction of it would cost to buy a new 57 reissue.

That's turned out nice. There's something about a sunburst strat.

I might've kept the battery compartment and fitted a Clapton mid-boost circuit.

They did put the battery in a weird place though - presumably it sat under the pots and the hole was just to access it without removing the scratchplate?

Great to see a neglected Strat brought back to life in such style.

As to who put EMGs in a reissue, It was probably David Gilmour! ;)

That looks really lovely; you've made a fine job there.  The thought of EMGs in a Strat makes me feel a bit queasy though.  Not quite sure I'll ever get over that. *shudders*

Lovely job :D

I helped someone buy one of those new (I couldn't afford one, but he wanted my opinion on the guitar he was buying). It was GORGEOUS. I prefered the 62, though  But I did manage to convince him to trust his own taste, so he bought the maple board one...

Still puzzled as to why somebody would want to put EMGs in this guitar. Maybe a Gilmour fan? I dunno

I'm using this as my main blues machine at the moment and I'm really liking how these old Van Zandt pickups sound! I might try out a Slowhand set or Apache set at some point, not sure yet though.

very nice - I love the look of the 2-tone sunburst and the single-ply scratchplate (and I'm not really a fan of Strats)

A pretty and very natural looking guitar. (I know, it is natural...)
