Title: nineteen80!!!
Post by: Copperhead on July 19, 2009, 01:24:49 AM
Had an awesome time jamming on this amp for HOURS today!!!!
Very cool, going to have to bring in the Swamp Thang loaded cab and Hotplate.
The Eminence "The Governor" speakers were not doing it for me clean,
BUT they absolutely rocked on the Krank channel with this head!!
This head can get some very heavy modern tones going, as well as the Plexi thing in the clip on the website.
YES IT CAN DO Lynch tone in spades without a boost!!! Hair metal aficionados rejoice! Dokken, Extreme, Ratt, EARLY Metallica, even Molly Hatchet, it's all in there!!
Adding the Krankshaft (TS) up front to push creates an absolutely crushing, meaner tone. Very cool, very versatile.
VERY FREAKING LOUD!!!!

Also it was very cool to meet Jeff Duncan (Armored Saint, DC4) and Rowan Robertson (DC4)
Very awesome listening to them jam, the video is gonna be a riot!!

This one? http://www.krankamps.com/news/whats-this-take-a-sneak-peak-at-the-new-nineteen80-amp-1074

I'm no authority on metal amps but going on the clip it sounds $%&#ing horrible... like a neutered jcm800?  Fizz fizz fizz

Hahahahahahahahaha!!! That's what you call fizz??!?!?!? LOLLOLOL!LLO!L!!!!!1!!!
Maybe it's your computer speakers?

I found that tone with a neck pup, a relatively low gain setting, like about 3.5-4
I thought it almost had a Molly Hatchet kinda tone at that point.
It gets way gainier than the clip; I kinda think the clip was at the low gain end of the spectrum of what it could do.

LOL1LOLLL111LOLOLOL11111

I listened with my hd25 Sennies, it's way too late to play rawkaus fizz through speakers!

Yea it was low-gain but that wouldn't be a complaint from me. Perhaps it was recorded with a shovel loaded with EMGS  :P :P :P

Ha!
The clip sounds trebly and a bit single coil-like, but I'm not hearing the fizz.

In person, I had the treble at 10, mids scooped a bit at 6, and the bass at 7.5
Sweep at 3, gain at like 7-8.
Nail bomb bridge pup, it screamed!
Only bass and treble control on clean, that coupled with the V30 ish Governors made the cleans a little too middy for me.
Separate Send and Return level controls on the tube powered loop looks like a great idea.

......I'm listening to MrBig, first album right now... add a little bass and take away a little bit of treble and that's the lead tone I had at the above settings, no TS boost. Pick squeals aplenty.

I hear the fizz a bit. I think it sounds ok but a bit harsh/brittle..

Don't love it, don't hate it. It's missing something for me, but I think it's a pretty nice sound that somebody could make great use of.

No matter how it sounds there are probably next to none going to be available in the UK anyway. I had a hell of a time finding a Krank Rev Jr - the first one - anywhere in stock in the UK.
Plus, why would anybody living in the UK waste probably over a thousand quid for an American-made amp based on a JCM800 when you can get the REAL JCM800 cheaper in the UK? Don't get me wrong, Krank makes some nice stuff, but the competition at their usual price point in the UK is overwhelming.

Not a particularly bad tone in that clip, just not very alive or exciting. Which is a shame, cause how the describe it in their blurb, I'd think should be great.

Who do these employ to design their aesthetics? Everything they make looks like a kid who's only experience of amps is Guitar Hero drew it in the ten minutes he had spare after finishing his Maths exam.
