Title: Getting the perfect string gauge.
Post by: jibidy on July 22, 2009, 12:41:38 AM
Problem is I like my guitar in drop D

I've tried 10, 13, 17, 26, 36, 46 (regular slinky) and I generally like to feel apart from the bottom string.

So I tried Dean Markleys 10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52.

I found that the low strings are now to tight.

Is there a gauge anyone knows of thats is like the regular slinky but with a 48/49/50 for the low E string?

Has anyone else noticed the little black marks on dean markley strings particularly the high E?

Why don't you buy individual strings? If it's that customed to you then it should be worth the price.

Sounds like a plan.

I use GHS Eric Johnson 10-50 on my Les Paul.
Great strings for all styles!

They are nickel though.

they sound good hunter.. i've found a 50 is good for drop-D tunings. not so keen on it for standard.

might pickup a set of those eric johnson.

I use 10 - 52 now in standard tunung and I always wonder why the 10, 13 and 17, feel heavier than the same guage strings in a 10 - 46 set.  Is there any reason for this?

On the 10-52 I am using at the moment the bottom E A and D strings feel to much tighter than the high three.

The 10-46 feel perfect accept for the bottom E tuned to D. Im thinking maybe a 48 would be good just to snap it up a bit as I found 52 to tight and 46 just a little bit floppy.

Yeah, definitely for tuning down to D.  I used to use 11's for standard tuning when I was just in to blues but then got into country bends so had to go down to 10-52

Give Dunlop Kerry king signatures a go, they are 10-46 but come with an extra 52 string for the low e string for drop tunings to get even tension. and they work perfectly imo. I use them on my ec-1000 in drop d and my PRS tremonti in Drop Db.

The alternative is to get a custom gauge from Newtone,
http://www.newtonestrings.com/

I use a standard gauge so just buy from Stringsdirect. Some of the other forum members are experiencing long lead times when ordering custom gauges direct from Newtone. IMO they make excellent strings.

I'm gonna wait for my money from paypal and then order loads of single from strings direct I think.

Though there are many gauges none seem to fit my requirements quite perfectly!! quite annoying.
