Title: PICKUPS FOR A LP STD
Post by: kevinr on August 03, 2009, 12:16:55 PM
I have after a short break purchased another LP Std, it has SD 59s fitted and sounds really good as one would expect a LP to sound, however as most of my guitars are now fitted with BKPs this one will not be an exception!
I have these sets without homes at the moment and I will use one of these, SMs AII, HDs and VH IIs which is the set that I'm favouring at the moment, I want to retain the vintage/hot sound is there any one with views on these pickups in a LP?

if you have the opportunity to try them all and choose the one that suits you best, well, go for it !  :)

Personally I would chose Mules.

From what you mentioned the SMs could be a tad weak, the HDs too thick and the VHIIs are risky. The VHIIs work great in my Edwards LP, but it's only because that is a very vocal and resonant guitar with thick Nickels on it. On an average LP I'd go for Mules which have a bit more meat to them.

Yeh, if you want a Les Paul to sound like a Les Paul Mules are it. I had that advice long ago from Tim. Any hotting is best achieved later in the chain.
