Title: What to put in a Fernandes Ravelle?
Post by: richardjmorgan on August 04, 2009, 12:30:20 PM
So here's the thing: I have a Fernandes Ravelle (set mahogany neck, mahogany body, maple cap, weighs a flippin' tonne), currently with a F. Sustainer in the neck position and the stock SD JB in the bridge, the latter of which I'm looking to replace with something else. Now, my other guitar, a Gibson V, has an EMG81 in the bridge, and while I know active pickups somewhat divide opinion on here, what I particularly like about it is the level of articulation I get from it, if that's the right term – everything seems a bit 'crisper' on the v and it seems less forgiving of my sausage-fingered playing, i.e. it forces me to try not to play like a chump. But for the Ravelle I'm loath to go down the EMG route as there's very little in the way of space to accommodate a battery without gouging bits out of the body. Plus, due to the sustainer, the electronics inside it are complicated enough already, thanks.

So basically, I'm looking for something to drop into the Ravelle which will do the following:

• give me a similar level of clarity to the EMG

• retain the warmth and thickness I get from the Ravelle which is a bit lacking on the V

• sound awesome when I'm tuned down to drop B going chuggachuggachugga through my 5150

Any suggestions, people?

Damn, hit "Post" by accident before I'd finished typing

What I meant to say was:

Miracle Man or Cold Sweat would be my first choices.  Both have more power than the JB, tons of clarity & will compliment, rather than work against, your guitar's fundamental characteristics.  The Cold Sweat bridge has a much nicer clean tone than the MM, which it probably why I'd choose it.

Cold Sweats seem to compliment mahogany guitars very well.

Haha, well, I'm not sure budget will stretch to that just yet, and swapping stuff out of my V is a mission because it's one of the big pickguard ones. But that also means changing the battery is a nuisance, so when it runs out I might go on the lookout for a passive alternative.

Been reading up on these two a bit. A phrase that seems to pop up quite frequently in reference to the MM is 'good for pinched harmonics'. That sounds very much like my cup of tea…

But it doesn't sound too warm. CS or painkiller.

the harmonics of the cold sweat are much thinner than the miracle man, but in a good way
more like Dimebag pinch harmonics than Zakk Wylde
the miracle man is more modern sounding
