Title: New Pickup Day pt.1: The Painkiller
Post by: 99_not_out on August 04, 2009, 02:06:21 PM
Two parcels of joy arrived this weekend, a Painkiller Bridge and a Blackguard flat '50 set :)
Both are installed, but I ended up tinkering with the PK most of the weekend so a report on the BG set to follow.

The Painkiller has gone into the bridge of my PRS SE Singlecut. Initially it was wired into the existing electrics, and although great sounding, was lacking a bit of the top end cut I was after. So its now wired straight to the Jack.

This is a superb pickup. It pushes my amp harder than my Warpig (I guess due to the amount of mids), and its clarity is simply amazing, even under high gain - sometimes it almost sounds like two guitars are playing: one uber tight bass tracking monster and one well defined mid crunching beast. Cleans are good too - although less so since it got wired straight into the Jack  Harmonics leap off the thing as you would expect, so even with my limited technique I can get pich-harmonics! Never had a ceramic pickup before and am loving this one, the PK has given me THE definitive metal tone (IMHO, ear of the beholder and all that)!

I was after (and have been for some considerable time) Mustaines tone on Rust in Peace as it was the first Metal album I ever bought, and now I have it (and soooo much more) - thanks to Tim et al at BKP for Delivering the Goods!

Love it!

Great review, I wasn't too interested in the Painkiller before but I really want one now... :?  :D

I was never that interested in the PK either ... but I mailed Tim with the kind of sound I was after and he recommended it, and who am I to disagree?

I really can't rate this pickup highly enough for Metal - I don't play too much modern stuff but I had a quick fiddle with a lower tuning and as expected it excelled as that. I tend to stick to standard EADGBE tuning in the main though. Does superb '80s crunch up to the more modern brutal sounds (I believe the term is 'djenk'?). Hardly need to touch the strings to get it to sing and its so clear ... like a wall of sound you can hear the individual bricks in 8)

Will try to do some clips, but I can only record through my Boss SE-70: great reverb, shitee distrotion!

Another thing I like about this pickup in its particular home is the Q factor - looks like a demure and classically styled PRS Singlecut, but now screams like a raging beast: Planets devastated, mankind on its knees
