Title: There's a fly in my tone
Post by: Jonny on August 06, 2009, 01:24:46 PM
Right, I was playing the VHT a few days ago and over time a buzzing sound came about, this wasn't the sort of gain/distortion kind of buzz, more like there was a fly in my amp or something.

Obviously can't be a fly but is it the amplifier, cabinet or my guitar?

Why the amp: It's secondhand and the footswitch EQ doesn't work, maybe something else isn't fully function either?

Why the cabinet: I don't have a clue but if its coming out of the speakers I don't want to disregard it, however it was made by Martin so I'd be VERY surprised if it was the cabinet.

Why the guitar: I soldered the pickups on my own and haven't checked the joints yet to see if they're solid or a bit dodgy, basically a tech didn't do the work so it might be my fault.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like an amp thing to me...

is it certain notes more than others or buzzing all the time

intermittent buzzes are a bar-steward to track down but if its only certain notes then its a sympathetic vibration and a little easier to source

Even if I play or don't play there's a buzz. And not an oscillating buzz or anything, but it's like a fly buzzing about.

If it's there when you don't play, try it with no guitar plugged in.  If it's still there, then it's a valve or amp issue.....

Ground the input, no guitar connected, nothing in the loop. Still there?

Spray some of this into your inputs.

Just to be sure, you know?

My money's on a dodgy pre-amp valve. Certainly should be something to try out to start with because .... of course .... owning a valve amp you will have a couple of spare 12ax7's around !!

Could also be one of the transformers. my output transformer on my bugera buzzes but I can't be bothered to fix it cause I don't think it's worth the money.
