Same here gwem - some ticket seller sent me an email at work today, it said zz top, and I was "HEY!"

But then it's at some place called wolverhampton, and the HORRENDOUS Wembley Arena.

Last and only time I've been there was to see some cr@ppy gig by some band on the, er, Afterburner Tour... I was so disappointed...

I saw them again 6 years or so ago at Brixton - they was fab then :D

Not goin to Wembley though :(

I was expecting this thread!! I'm stuck in two minds at the moment. Trying to not spend too much on gigs now due to the impending new arrival in my family - it's either Bonamassa in Southampton or ZZ Top at Wembley. My head is saying Rev Willie G at the moment.

Any other BKPers planning to go to Wembley? I agree that it is not a great venue. I saw Dylan there a few years ago and he, and the venue, were both very bad.

I'm seeing Bonamassa in Llandudno - got quite a few gigs on the agenda before the end of the year:

Bonamassa
The Answer
ZZ Top
Steel Panther
Reverend and the Makers
Buddy Whittington & Aynsley Lister

I REALLY want to see ZZ Top live so I will probably make the travel to either Wolverhampton or Wembley. At the moment it's looking wike Wolverhapton as it's closer and cheaper. Saw B.B. King at Wembley earlier this year, the venue wasn't the best but BB was awesome!

Looking good mate. I've got a few lined up:

Andy Fairweather Low - not sure what to expect
Juliette Lewis - saw her supporting the Darkness years ago and thought she was pretty decent
Bonamassa/ZZ Top

That's about it so far - I'm more into smaller gigs at the moment (althought ZZ Top isn't so small!!)

Wolverhampton looked the better gig - I loathe Wembley.

Steel Panther are better seen as a club gig in my opinion- much better vibe
Mind you - I'd love to see ZZ Top at a club!

The latter for me.  Though I wouldn't be quite so polite.

Yeah, I've only been there once, and that was enough

I'm in the "I'd rather miss your tour than have to see you at Wembley" bracket - obviously not all punters are of that opinion, otherwise it wouldn't be worth anyone's while to play there!

I'm quite shocked to see all the hatred toward Wembley.

It's not good but nowhere near as bad as the true abomination that is Earls Court! I will NEVER go to see a band in that aircraft hanger again.

The sound slaps back off the walls and makes even BB King and Clapton sound horrid.

You can't see a goddam thing either so I end up watching a video with piss-poor sound.

I made the mistake of getting down the front to see Maiden there with Slayer in support.
Sadly, the $%&#-wits who think a circular mosh-pit is the ultimate concert experience were out in force so I couldn't even f**king watch the band on the floor.

I wanted to f**king rip their throats out considering I've been a Maiden & Slayer fan since before they were born.

can't comment on wembley or earl's court, but the circle jerks i can!  saw Metallica in Dublin last week and these asses were in force there too.  it's like spending two hours at a mass brawl!  some of these things get remarkably violent.  a bit of jumping about is fine, but deliberately throwing people at each other?  where is the pleasure in this?  and then some total neanderthals started picking their friend up in the air and rather than crowd surf, hurled him into the air so he landed on people in front!  this idiot landed on my sister's neck and momentarily knocked her out!  she can hardly move her neck a week later!  i wasn't unhappy when he landed on the ground a bit later and someone drove their boot into his ribs.

rock shows were always a bit physical, but it's getting ridiculous.

oh, back to the point :)  i hope the rev. G and his congregation put on a great show.  say hello to Pearly for us!

Thanks to this thread I now have 2 tickets for Wembley.  I had no idea they were touring: well done BKP forum.

Regarding Wembley I'm very much in the "It's not the best" category but I saw BB King there this year and the sound was fine I thought.  It's a bit of a soulless venue but I'm happy to go back.

Some bands can make Wembley sound good if they have a GREAT sound guy
Queen did it - but then they had Trip Khalif doing their sound

Motley Crue did it on the Dr Feelgood tour

I hve seen a few great gigs there - just want to be at the wrong end of the hall or up in the gods as you cant see and the sound is poor (too quiet)

I saw the Manics at Wembley maybe three years back and it was a crackin gig, only time I've been like.

As for ZZ Top, I love their stuff but last time I saw them they were piss poor.  I was massively disappointed to say the least as I'd wanted to see the Rev & Co since I was at school.

1) Great news about going to see 'The Rev' Dave !   I saw them about ten years ago at Birmingahm, and they were indeed "Good Ol' Boys" ... :D

2) Pink Floyd ( 'The Wall' and 'Pulse' tours ) made Earls court sound positively intimate. Having said that, all the hanging 'Hammer' Flags, motorised hardware - and sound engineering technology they used would probably have tamed the Grand Canyon !  :)

My ears are $%&#ed...

Steel Panther were funny for about 10 minutes, but the joke kind of wore thin after that for me. Talented musicians but left me cold.

However ZZ Top were bloody great, I've wanted to see them for an age and I was not disappointed. Some nice planks he has there and what can I say about the backline! 4 stacked Zvex Nanos, if it was me I would have probably tripped over the bloody things.

Anyway pictures

I always thought the Moderne was an ugly guitar but seeing Billy play it makes me think again.

Was I wrong about that guitar or is it just that Billy can make anything look on him?

Love the bass too. Loaded with TV Jones Thundertrons.

I'm not sure if the Moderne is ugly or not.... I think it looks cool, but maybe only because it's from the same "family" as the '58 V and Explorer.

It certainly has a very stupid headstock.

Just got back from the gig! I traveled down from Edinburgh and was definitely not let down!

Me and my mate managed to squeeze our way down the front (right in front of the Rev!). My ears are still ringing but what a cracking show they put on. I liked the fact that it was a pretty small venue too, made the gig that bit more special, probably miles better than the Wembley gig will be. It was a great setlist and some good stage banter too.

Steel Panther were better than what I was expecting, they are very talented musicians but it wasn't really my thing. I might check out their CD though to give them another chance, because as I said, they were very talented musicans.

It was definitely worth the 7+ hour all round journey, had a great night out and some good banter in the pub after the gig too. I had been wanting to see ZZ Top for years and years and I am very glad I can finally say that I have now seen Rev Willie G and Co. :D

It's not ugly...... You leave her alone! :x
The machinehead for the D string is in such a stupid position the string hits the machinehead for both the A and E string before having a terrible break angle on the nut. Who needs straight string pull? Such a weird guitar it's cool

He is a minister/vicar/priest of some kind, so he has the title "Reverend".

William Gibbons gets shortened to Willie G or Billy G

The Reverend Willie G  ;)

Just got home from the Wembley gig suitably impressed.  I've waited about twenty years to see ZZ Top and they didn't disappoint.  How three people make a sound like that I will never properly understand.  It was great, they were great, no complaints.  And I liked the Moderne too though not as much as the sparkly Billy Bo.

I just got in, and was a little disappointed :( They didn't really seem to get into it all that much, and the drummer looked like it was such a chore to be there(never acknowledged the crowd, not even once). And whoever decided to put triggers on the toms should be shot, they sounded so bad, it really put me off whenever there was a fill!

Liked the guitar and bass sound though, and the songs were pretty well played :) Steel Panther were pretty cool too, a band that you've got to see live to appreciate methinks. Was an enjoyable evening for sure, but don't know if it was worth the £45 ticket price.

And finally, considering that Wembley is a giant shed with a stage and a PA, the sound wasn't too bad- certainly nothing great about it though!

Got a last minute ticket for £25 so managed to see the show
I han't rushed to get a ticket before because I hate Wembley for many reasons - mainly no atmosphere and poor sound

But I was glad to finally see ZZ Top tonight
I missed Steel Panther due to being stuck on a non moving train en route and already running late but heard they were good- I will see them when they tour in March

The sound was pretty crummy apart from Billy and Dusty's guitars sounding pretty good
The drums reverberated off the hard back wall and swamped much of the sound - you'd think they would have learnt to sort this at Wembley by now.

Billy G was awesome to watch though and I was transfixed for the hour and a half they were on
They played all the big hits and Billy made good use of the BillyBo guitar for much of the set
Couldn't see any amps on stage - suspect the cabs were dummies(could be wrong though)

Didn't mind the video screens but as ever wished they would only use them to show what was happening on stage - I feel when they show MTV videos and other stuff that it distracts from the show rather a lot.

That Wembley sound you're describing is just what I remember Jonathan... Only been there once, to see ZZ Top on the Afterburner tour. I also felt the same as Oli about them not seeming to get into it. I was SO disappointed.

I finally saw them at Brixton four or five years ago, and they were very very good - redeemed my image of them :D

I'm so glad I didn't go to wembley this week - I did wonder if I was cutting off my nose to spite my face, but it sounds like I made the right decision.... when are they gonna pull that place down?!

The Wolverhampton gig sounds much more like my Brixton experience a few years back - the very last time I manouvered myself up anywhere near the front at a gig.

And great pics guys :D I especially like the first one Twinfan posted.

Was at the Wembley gig last night, very impressed! Like Iron Beast I travelled from (near) Edinburgh, and was well worth the trip!

My friend and I are now going to grow chest length beards and I want a billy bo!

Must say though, I liked the moderne, despite it's plain rediclous headstock.

I've never been much of a fan of Gretsch guitars, but Billy's is pretty damn cool!
