Title: Goddamn Weather!!!
Post by: MrBump on August 08, 2009, 11:02:44 AM
Just picked up my Tele after a week of slogging it out in a sh!tty job in the city, and it's almost a quarter tone sharp, and buzzing like a bar-steward, even after my fret dress.

Yam SG is the same, although without the buzzing - sturdier build I suspect.

Gotta be the humidity, hasn't it?

Probably. Let them settle for a while.

I'm guessing yeah.

Mine have been moving about a little bit this year - not as much as last year though.

Funnily enough, I never noticed this until I came on this forum and tdpri - that's almost 30 years of trouble free guitar playing, and then the internet infects my guitars with "temperature/humidity sensitivity" disease

Much as I hate the summer  :x , and I'm sure you're right about the humidity, I've never noticed much effect on my guitars.  But they tend to have fairly high action, so a slight neck movement isn't enough to cause any buzzing.

It seems to be much more of an issue in parts of the US where they have far more extreme climate changes.

I think it's the same with me Philly - higher action probabaly means I don't get hit with sudden fret buzzes.

I've also never been that concerned about tuning drifting - I expect to tune my guitar every time I pick it up for a session. But now with all these guitars around me, and reading about it on the interweb, I'm starting to notice trends in sharpening or flattening of guitars.

I know! Temps and humidity in the low 'teens has been terrible! Required 1/8 turn of a truss rod nut on one of my guitars!
Can't wait until it gets below 100 and below 8% humidity like it should be. Dang Monsoon season!  :D

What monsoon??!

I need it to rain solidly in Leeds for the next three days - where's the bluddy rain?

Monsoon season in the Sonoran Desert. Almost nightly haboobs. (of varying intensity)  Highest humidity of the year. Very hot although the highest temps are usually before the dew point goes up signaling the start of monsoon season, usually in the early part of July. Brief but intense thunderstorms at night, tree damage, power lines down, that sort of thing. Amazing electrical storms, rings of lightning in the sky.

I'd love to see that lightning, but I'd hate to live in that climate!

Humidity has been above average this year - the hygrometer in my music room has been >60% for at least 2 weeks with a high of 64% & had been hovering around 58% for a while before that.

Today was the first time in a LONG time I've seen it as low as 53%.

On the flip side, we had a relatively mild winter (low humidity is much more damaging to guitars) where it rarely dropped <40%.
