Title: Guitar Injury

Just read the thread about machine heads and thought I'd ask yr advice about something...
I knocked my SG over the other day and broke one of the tuners - when removing it I found the top screw that attaches it to the headstock had snapped level with the wood - Bllx - any suggestions about how to remove the screw shaft? Or repair possibilities?

You could drill it out. it's best if you let a luthier do that. Or you could go for a new set of tuners that have the screw in a different position.

Suxs!!!

If it were me.  I would take out my dremel and with a steady hand cut a little slit on the screw to give me just enough of a groove to use a flat head screwdriver.

That is a tricky one to resolve
the guys suggestions are as good as it gets I'm afraid
I have once or twice been lucky enough to get the screw out by slotting it but very tricky when sheared off level with wood
Have also ended up drilling all around it with a dremel (and felt like a dentist!) and removing screw and then dowelling hole.
This hopeflly would be hidden by new machinehead anyway
Have also used a piece of fine copper/brass tubing and cut a cuttting tip on it and made a tiny holesaw and tried to cut around screw- very tricky also

Thanks for the advice fellas...

I think lady luck was on my side for this one - it was late last night and I was having a few beers trying to figure out how I could get round this problem when...I managed to catch a rough bit of the screw with the callous on my fingertip and raise it enough to twist with my finger nails then grab it with pliers and unscrew it !?!?!?!?

It was just before I went to bed last night, cos the beers and all, I thought it'd been a dream....... but sure enough the screw was gone when I woke this morning.

Otherwise I would've dropped it off to a luthier like you said - didnt fancy my chances of success getting mediaeval on its ass with dremels blowtorches etc. My woodworking skills are similar to that of Homer S. Would've probably ended up with a mandolin.

Be sure to get a guitar stand and/or a guitar hook on the wall.

hear hear - nothing more valuable for the price to a guitar player.
I hate nightmare situations like that - makes me cringe to read about them. i also hate it when real life gets mixed up with dreams. argh.

Glad to see you sorted it out. You were very lucky. The only time I knocked my old SG over resulted in a broken neck joint  :cry:
