Title: a matching pair
Post by: hooglebug on August 11, 2009, 06:51:41 PM
i decided id do a matching pair of desiree and sakura svelte models with the same woods and electronics. they're both going to have mahogany bases, bubinga tops, wenge necks and ebony fretboards. the bodies are hollowed out and the tops carved inside as well as out. both will have bare knuckle p90's, hence me putting it on here - thought some people might like to see

heres (http://"http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/hooglebug/Photo0240.jpg") the top board

so far with the desiree iv got the top cut to shape. then other things came up and iv kind of ignored that one.

with the sakura iv begun shaping the top and got the body base cut out and routed.

heres some pics so far - everythings still in a rough state and will be cleaned up obviously

base
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/hooglebug/sakura/15.jpg)

inside of top
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/hooglebug/sakura/13.jpg)

lower bouts rough carved
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/hooglebug/sakura/14.jpg)

angle and uper bouts rough carved
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h284/hooglebug/sakura/17.jpg)

the shoulder and cutaway will wait till the neck pocket (deep set) is cut and the top glued on. also, the base side of the body will be rounded over once the top is glued to the base. now i just have to get the other one to the same state as this one

indeed. its cos its quarter sawn the router bit has just pulled the end grain to pieces. iv ordered some blades for my scroll saw which iv never used since it was given to me a couple of years ago. iv been meaning to get some for ages and this is the perfect excuse

scroll saw blades came today after ordering them last night from axminster and got the two headstocks cut out. for my first go on a scroll saw i didnt do too bad.
they're still a bit rough. will do inlays tomorrow then they'll be ready for scarfing onto the necks

Very nice! It's done exactly like a pearl inlay? very thin letter :o
Title: Re: a matching pair

its silver wire. route the inlay cavity like normal but then cut and bend the wire to shape to fit into it

Nice! I like inlays, made one in my first guitar build, will try again on one I'm building (stopped a while, but still on my mind)
But I need to learn a LOT about it

finally managed to get more done over the last few days. scarfed the headstocks and did the neck profile. glued in the cf rods and routed the neck pocket. both are nice tight fits and light as a feather. obviously the tops will add some weight but i think they're gonna come in at quite a nice weight overall

I can't decide which I like better, the Sakura or the Desiree, they both give me the horn.

nice little touch with the end of the fretboard.

personally i am not too keen on multiply on fretboards, mainly because i worry about the outer strings wearing it quicker.... but it does look smashing

Beautiful work, love the double cut one myself. Now that's what you call a long tenon!!!  :D  Those guitars are really superb.

This is like a striptease!

I can only echo what's been said - lovely looking guitars.

Are you a pro builder, Hooglebug?  You seem to be getting through the project at a cracking rate...

i wouldnt exactly call myself a pro. im using cheap tools - drill press, free scroll saw, a router and angle grinder, rest are hand tools - in my cramped dusty garage hehe

It looks really nice.  there are a lot of subtle details in it.  I really like the way you have the headstock reflecting the carve of the body.

Beautiful work. Very nice wood as well, do you have a regular supplier, or did you get it from eBay?

Anyway kudos, this blows 99% of the big guitar companies away.

i get most of my body wood from david dyke, but theres a timber yard where i get exotic tops and neck wood (wenge etc)

That's awesome - I like the double cut one best. Would be great toget some clips up if you manage to get a hosting site that you can work with. Soundclick gets used quite a lot on here - I've never had any problems with it.

Also, I avoided this thread for a while as I thought it was about matching valves. Little did I realise what I had been missing!

its recorded through clean ac30 on guitar rig

first up is the sakura - both/neck/bridge, then desiree - both/neck/bridge
