Title: Hi major luthier help needed
Post by: mikey5 on August 12, 2009, 11:24:44 PM
Ok I know i got on here and bragged to everyone about how cool my guitar is. Unfortunately my luthier friend is a moron and he totally ruined the paint job and the rabbinet. I also want to get the fretboard replaced because this dude did the worst job and did not radiusing it. The frets also need to be filed, and raised in other places. So basically I need someone stateside Texas hopefully who can

redo the paint job redo the rabbinet replace the frets or fretboard. How big of a job is this Can this be done? Is there a forum where I could get in touch with stateside luthiers and such and hopefully get that taken care of. I hope that he was just careless on the finishing touches and its stuff that can be fixed.

Let me know

They may be able to help you over at Project Guitar.  I know one of the mods is from Texas.

Sounds like it can be done but obvioulsy I haven't seen it.  Maybe the fretboard wont need to be taken off and can be sanded down with the frets out while it's still attached.  Of course, if this was me the problem would be how to remove the guitar from your mates arse first.

Whats up with the paint job, surface scratches or something worse?

Yea that would be an issue. The issue is this it looks like there is glue smudged here and there and the paint is just cr@p there are places with globs of paint here and there. There are hairline cracks and it is not shiny or anything. The paint is yellowed in places as well. Also the binding is cr@p it looks like it might come out some day. It just does not look like a new guitar should. I think all the hardware should be removed the paint be taken off somehow and just redone. You mentioned sanding the fretboard down would I have to file the nut a little lower too? So the action could be lower? I obviously dont know much about this sort of stuff.
Thanks for the input
1 Paint
2 Fretboard
3 Binding (Id like the neck to have some binding as well)

Thats pretty much it
So I will check out the project guitar guys

What's the deal? Did you pay for a custom guitar or to have work done on one? If you did, i'd ask for a refund or take him to small claims court.

I think this thread calls for pictures, to be honest.

I will try to take some pics when I get home. The guitar was done by this fellow for me at a discounted price because I am a volunteer aid worker. He has retired his lutherie company and yea I have no way to nail him for a refund. I sent him photos and even lent him a les paul from a friend to get it copied. He assured me it would be even better. All that to say I need the repair
