Cue enormous flurry of cashing-in from Gibson....

Sadly many more of the electric pioneers & legends are gonna pass soon.
At least he went out on his shield - still gigging every week.
-
That saddens me very much, i always wanted to go see him play at the club in NY, was actually planning to do it before the end of the year. His contributions to modern music, the way its played, recorded, will not be soon forgotten.
R.I.P.
-
A true genius and legend. Rock In Peace ('cos you know he won't be restin')
-
The world of modern music has lost a grand master and innovator.
We all owe him big time.
Thanks, Les, for everything you've done!
-
Aye, R.I.P to such an influential guy. Truly very sad. :(
-
R.I.P Les Paul :(
I was fortunate enough to see him perform at a club in NY while I was there last year. He was a great guitarist and a very nice guy too! Going to play my Les Paul for a bit this evening in his honour!
-
Very sad but at least he had a long innings and seems to have been very fulfilled.RIP Lester.
-
RIP in deed, and 94 ain't too shabby a run :)
Here's the inventor of multitracking and overdubbing!
-
Yep, he put a lot in to stuff that makes us all happy.
-
Such a shame, also an inspiration that you / we can do what we love doing right up until the end, however far away that may be.
Quite a few people of that generation will have had to give up the piano due to arthritis, how did he keep at it?
U2 guitarist The Edge, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, Guns N' Roses star Slash and The Who's Pete Townshend are among those closely associated with the Les Paul sound.
I thought he was a player of everything, or is it just name dropping?

You could say exactly the same of Townshend, to be fair.
But I believe Mr Edge has very often been seen with a white LP Custom in recent years?
-
Forgot about that one, I just didn't remember him with a LP at all, more the '76 explorer.

he changes guitars like 10 times a set.....I don't really think the Edge can be casted into the fender or gibson camp, he simply plays what he wants, and to be fair i think i've seen him play a black strat more than a white gibson

and flanging too

RIP :(
-
RIP Les, the world of guitar would be a very different place without you.
-
:(
What would we all be doing now if that man didnt do what he did?
RIP
-
RIP Les. He was a true pioneer.
-
RIP!
-
Absolutely gutted when I heard this earlier :( :( :(
An icon lost, thank you for making the best guitars on the planet, r.i.p!
-
very sorry to hear that :(
-
A great shame. He was such a good player in his younger days. He could play faster than most modern shredders in the 40s
-
A sad loss, but he had a long and fulfilled life and was enjoying music right up till the end.
RIP Lester...... and thankyou for all you did for us all.
-
I generally find public grief for deceased celebrities rather distasteful, but this is one of the few (in fact, ONLY that I can think of) where my life would geniunely have been different were it not for them.
I find myself quite sad tonight.

Very true. I don't mind a passing "R.I.P" for a celebrity we admire or whatever, but Les was a real class act. Anyone who plays music can mourn his passing.
-
Les Paul's impact on music is incalculable, and as guitar players we in particular owe him a huge debt.
Thank you Les for all your passion and hard work. RIP.
-
I've shed tears in the past for musicians that I admired who left us too soon. But my god......Les gave virtually every musician alive today priceless gifts that none of us can every thank him enough for. All of his ideas, inventions, technological developments, and to say nothing of his musical brilliance and heart......it's staggering how much every one of us (musicians and music fans) owes that gentleman. I never had the privilege of seeing him perform live. I wish I had. I wish I could have shaken his hand and thanked him for all that he has given every one of us. All I can do now is say "Thank you for EVERYTHING Les......every one of us will miss you." :(

RIP. But what an amazing life! We take the electric guitar for granted nowadays so thanks to Les for his ideas and getting them working.
-
a death that shold be noted much more than the likes of Jade Goody or even Michael Jackson, but that will get a brief mention at the bottom of page 12 of the papers.
but a life that should be celebrated and remembered. i picked up my Les Paul when i heard last night and played some music, surely the best way to remember him.
Thanks for everything Les, let's hope you're not the last of your kind

Agree with that - although it did make it on to sky text. I was surpirsed by that.
This is very sad but he did have a long and very, very good life. Imagine playing guitar for the majority of your life! Great stuff. I like the story about when he broke his arm when he was younger. He insisted on having it set so he could still play guitar!!

Likewise, on all counts.

+1 - Only just heard as I have been visiting friends for a couple of days - very, very sad.
-
i've been trying to think what to put in this thread since it started. clearly he was a great man, and lived to a ripe old age - i'm sure hes rightly proud of his achievements!
i believe the les paul is also the first signature guitar too?

Blimey, that's a tough one! :?
I suppose the guitars Paul Bigsby built for Merle Travis and Grady Martin were sort of signature models (they had their names on!), but they were one-offs.
I'm wondering if any pre-1950s jazz players had their own signature models, but I can't think of any.
-
I saw him about 10 years ago because I thought that if I didn't I would kick myself later when he died. I am glad I did, even though he had another guitarist playing a lot of his lead parts. It was a great show, he was an excellent showman and to top it off we had an ex-Miss Australia at the table for dinner too! He really did a lit of innovations. I worked on a friend's Les Paul recording about 4 years ago and it had a great sound. I never realised that the recording pickups sounded like P-90's without the hum! He was also responsible for remote control recording, I think slap back echo was one of his too, and the man put an SM57 on a gooseneck with a volume onto his guitar so it was where he wanted it to be! A big loss to the world.
-
Ted Weber died this week too
wtf is happening? :(
-
^ yeah, i heard that, more sad news :(
-
I remember that I wanted a Les Paul before I evan new what a Les Paul was (courtesy of Steve Clarke, Def Leppard) What an amazing legacy to leave behind, such sad news but what a life to celebrate. R.I.P Les Paul and thanks for one of the most iconic guitars to ever grace the planet.
-
True legend, he created the ultimate rock guitar! RIP
-
Thats really sad news, two in one week (Ted Weber of Weber Speakers also passed on).
Many thanks to Les for being responsible for my favourite guitar of all time and my continual enjoyment of guitar playing.
+1 on the Steve Clark thing, I saw him with a Les Paul and knew I had to have one.

Nice.

A great life lived indeed . 8)
It just shows how many 'useful' and enjoyable years you can add to your life, when pursuing something you love doing : Les Paul and B.B.King being two examples. As has already been said, what a staggering effect his work and influence have had on both guitarists - and the development of music as a whole.
Thanks for everything Les !
