Title: Facelift time!!
Post by: WezV on August 17, 2009, 07:21:04 PM
a bit like the rick parfitt facelift thing, but much cooler!!

So i still have my white explorer, a great little guitar but the white does tend to split the crowd and i have been wondering what to do about it for a while
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/complete%20guitars/DSC01771.jpg)

money is a bit tight to be going for a full repsray at the moment so i wanted to do something on the cheap and decided to make myself a full face vinyl decal for it.  I brought a 5m roll of vinyl for a tenner and a spent maybe an hour cutting and sticking and here is where we are at now!!

still not sure how long this would last.  I dont see it coming off soon without really heavy gigging - but if it does come off i could have another design on pretty quickly... or if i decide to make it more long lasting it could be sprayed over.

Me likes it. Good job on the cutting.

i found out the body template i used which made everything a lot easier.  i cut out a full body shape and taped it facedown down to the template.  then i could draw on the paper backing to get the layout right before cutting - all the time  keeping it stuck down to the template.

Superb mate - glad you went with ToneMonkey's and my approval!!!!

I've always liked that guitar, and now you're really tempting me with GAS.......

i ordered the vinyl not long after you and kaj left - it just had to be done!

not sure i would sell it like this just yet, the vinyl is very effective but i would want to know it was more secure before letting it go... but it was much better to do it this way first rather than pay for a respray and realise i didnt like it

i also have about 9.5m of red vinyl left - if only i had more white guitars :)

I like it Wez - that's similar to the sort of design I want on a white tele. Maybe I'll get a cheapo body to experiemnt with.

I was going to say that I was not a great fan of that shape but the vinyl has really made a difference for me and I think that, as they used to say on Blue Peter, it looks "jolly effective".

Reminds me of the finishes you used to get on the 80s Charvels.

yeah, it definately isnt original - but i am loving it so far

I must confess it was playing on guitar hero that convinced me to do it

That is really effective Wez - I'm not a fan of all white anyway, and pics of that guitar always looked a bit, I dunno, "Duran Duran" to me  so I never paid it that much attention.

But a few bits of well-placed vinyl really bring it alive. Probably still a bit "80s" for my tastes, but it looks mighty fine :D

Now if we're talking white teles with rosewood boards - I'm with you all the way there

I guess if you put a laminated scratch-plate on a white guitar, I'm happier then.

thats pretty rock! needs a skull shaped headstock now ;)

i attached a vinyl mustang stripe to my cyclone, the vinyl was of nice quality. i haven't gigged or played it too much - the guitar mostly sits in pieces in my flat ;) but i have noticed a bit of damage to the stripes. its not lifting or anything, but some chunks have been taken out of it.

havnt decided yet.  It used to have some kent armstrong motherbuckers in it last time it was toegther but that must be getting on for a couple of years now.  It was put together in my pre-BKP days so it would get something new now

it was just satinised after with 0000 wire wool and a little touch of briwax

i think it could be faster with some chunkier frets - the ones on it feel a little small to me now

so you wirewool the neck then coat it?

how long would that stay super shred fast for?

just to chip in with all the people agreeing this is a fun and really entertaining guitar to play. i was pretty tempted myself too, but prefer the full-size explorer shape. i guess it still has the holy diver in it.

Prefer the all white look tbh, looks a bit tacky and cheap now I think :(

and whats wrong with tacky and cheap!! ;)

by the way, its fully reversable at this stage.  i may have another go to see if i can get it even neater

how long would that stay super shred fast for?

wirewool first to remove shine, add a bit of wax with wire wool , leave overnight and buff again with cloth

how long it lasts depends on the player more than anything else, but it lasts long enough not to be a problem
