Title: Looking for new pickups
Post by: Aztec on August 31, 2009, 03:05:10 PM
Hi!

I've got a ESP Horizon NT-II FM. It's a maple neck-through with alder wings and with an ebony fretboard. A Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck and JB in the bridge at the moment.

The problem is I just can't quite get the tones from these pups that I'm looking for. The '59 is ok but the JB just lacks in low end punch. Mostly I play thrash and prog metal. Think early Metallica, Megadeth, Opeth, Cynic.

For the bridge I would like something with more of a darker sound with low end punch for those heavier riffs and in the neck something that could get me some warm jazzy tones.

Any suggestions would be great.

ENGL Blackmore through a Framus 2X12 with V30's.

I'd pick a Nailbomb or a Holy Diver

the Diver is thicker and punchier than the JB, very clear and open sounding, smooth top
best for leads, cleans, open chords and big power chords
the Nailbomb is less middy (but not scooped), sharp, but still very punchy with some nice high end bite
a bit more aggressive, more percussive palm muting response, more dense sounding
still can do great cleans and leads, just not as fluid and nice as the Diver

Judging from clips I really like the Nailbomb in the bridge...of course it's hard to judge because most people have different guitars and amps, but still, it sounds good.

Would a Cold Sweat be good for jazzy cleans in the neck?
