well i have never recorded anything before and have no idea how to go about getting the stuff together to do so, so i thought id ask you guys....
i need the equipment to record vocals, acoustic guitar and an amped electric / direct line in from amp...(covering an alternative rock genre influences including radiohead placebo nirvana pixies etc..)
i know that would mean a mic (sure sm58 bog standard choice?)
and then i would need recording softwear for my (rather cr@p so nothing too complex) computer... (pc)
but what else? a midi interface to plug mic into that then plugs into computer?
a soundcard?? (dnt understand these)
maybe just getting a minimac with garage band to begin with would be a good idea?
can the mic plug directly into a computer or does it need to go into an interface???
sorry im a complete noob... what would be best?
i would also like the softwear to be compatible with a midi keyboard to plug in to play drums, synth, violin, bass etc also for use with my drum and bass project i want to start :)
cheers guys x

A Zoom recorder (HS or H4n) would cover a lot of your needs....

And so open The Gates of Hell.
RUN!
Many ways to skin this cat.
I started with audiocard (soundcard with decent mic pres and DACs), mics, amps, PC DAW, then went to modellers for a while, then modellers are satan spawn then went back to mics, then DI + Reamping, which I'm STILL $%ing with.
Others have been pleased with just a standalone recorder.
I dunno.
I just try to make things sound not-horrible. Dont worry too much about what you use to do that.

MDV is right...
But I'm going with the standalone recorder.. it sucks to deal with computer 'issues'.. though in theory with a half decent soundcard you can use Reaper and not pay anything extra.

How about Line 6 Toneport KB37? It's an interface, a modeller and midi keyboard all in one package?
