Title: Double P90
Post by: rmandell91 on September 12, 2009, 06:55:47 PM
Hi, im looking to do something quite unusual on the pickup front for my warmoth Telecaster.
I was thinking something along the lines of two p90's in the bridge, like this really:

I was wondering what my wiring options are regarding this...
Is it possible to wire them together to get a oversized humbucker vibe going? (i dont know if thats a stupid question or not  :?)
If not.... what would be the best way to wire them together to make the best of there being two pickups in the bridge??

Cheers!

Yes you can make a humbucker that way.
I'd wager that is the reason for them to be placed that way in that guitar.

I also wouldn't be too surprised if those were BKPs too seeing as Manson are a main dealer along with the Matt Bellemy connection (he uses a nailbomb and a mississippi queen usually I think).

Please do, however, make sure it actually looks a damn site better than that guitar.

Thinking about it it reminds me of someone:

Kaos pad I think, a Muse theme guitar. Or maybe Matt's, I have no idea.

I am wondering how you would get the best out of that setup. Are you looking for the p90s to be humbucking? Or would you rahter be able to put them in series or parallel too, even 'coil split'?

i think ideally id like them to be humbucking. Is that a special pickup that has to be made or is it do withthe wiring I put them in? Would there be phase issues? This is all pretty unknown to me so I was hoping that someone could shed any light on anything really!

and just to add, yeh its one of matts guitars, has a XY midi touchpad at the bridge and agreed... its pretty ugly

i would go for a series/split/parallel 3 way switch

i remember one of the forum members talking about a weird thing he was planning to ask tim to make, an humbucker made of two pig90 coils!

I think to get "humbucking" (ie, bucking the hum and interference) out of the series/parallel setting when both pickups are on, you'd want to specify that one of the pickups is RWRP when you order.

has that thing got an LCD screen in the bridge???

yup.......

its an x-y midi control pad, which can be used to control pretty much anything

its too bad he has like 4 of those and doesn't bother to use it :) haha....

so yeah basically if you see a guitar with one of those in it definitely was Muse inspired

i wasn't serious about the LCD, though i've never seen such a midi pad before... it should be useful, but i'm quite traditionalist when it comes to guitars. i like them to sound like... ahem... electric guitars, and don't want them to do ANYTHING else! :)

How would the C-NB bridge/NB neck combo be in a basswood body/maple top/maple neck/rosewood fretboard guitar through a Splawn Quick Rod for epic tight rip your intestine wout metalZZZ?????

Is it true that these are like overwound hotter CS's?????

Nathan Sheppard has the 2xP90's as a humbucker as an option in his NS25 guitars:

you'll find the poles of those P90s will be quite far apart compared to a normal humbucker, and give quite a wide string window, and potentially mud (especially with something like a pig90) if wired serially.

looks wise - amazing :) and thats 50% of what its about
