Title: Gibson E/2
Post by: Everlost on November 05, 2005, 01:59:48 AM
So I'm getting my 1980 Gibson E/2 on Tuesday. It was probably stupid that I've never played an Explorer before and just bought one for a little over a grand.

Has anyone else had any experience with these they'd like the share to hold me over until tuesday?

i like em, comfortable to play sitting down, very good sound (i've only played a Gibson 3 pickup custom korina explorer though, was amazing!)...

The guitar seems to rest nice, kind of like a LP i thought, but with better neck access :)

We need some pics when you get it! 8)

I have two of them and love mine.  They have close to a Les Paul tone and are far more comfortable to play than one may think buy looking at them.  The necks are a little flatter, not baseball-ish like the 50's Les Paul necks.  Throw in some good pick-ups and you have a wonderful playing beast in your hands....Mine are black with distressed Brass pickguard and truss cover and the other one is natural with white pickguard and gold hardware.  I have the EMG 81 and 85 set in both for now.

I used to have an Epi explorer. And I miss it. Explorers sound great, good beefy tone. More comfortable than you might think.

i'd expect an explorer to sound better than a LP - they must have a lot more resonating wood. and also apparently they're a lot more comfy than the les paul - why doesn't everyone already have explorers?

Well it came in yesterday and it is amazing. I love the feel and comfort....god the comfort was a surprise. The only thing I don't like is I think the nut was cut too shallow, the Low E keeps popping out and buzzing.

Soon i'll be getting a Tonrpros Locking Bridge, New Tuners, and maybe a Hipshot Extender Key to totally pimp it out. I'm still deciding on what BKP's though.

Some Cold Sweats for the original '76 sound, maybe? Miracle Man for big tight bass metal, Warpig for ultra deep chugging. Or maybe wait for the Painkiller.

Edit: Mules for vintage sound for rock and Skynyrd. :D

I might go for some hot Mississippi Queens - I think the awesome P90 sound would be killer in an explorer!
