JAN - hard to find.
EH, groove tubes, any others? Whats good out of whats readily available.
Purpose is to get a bit more of a smoother high end and opener grindier mid (rather than just top end) into a powerball.
-
Never mind, looks like watford valves have the JANs. Will call.
-
jan phillips off watford valves, sorted. Hopefully.
-
interesting. I think my savage se has a 5751 in V1. It's supposed to have, anyway. it does sound a bit smoother than most of the other engls I've tried, but then again they could do that with the circuit design too, i assume.

Pass.
HTH suggested it in V1 and the phase inverter when he asked me what I didnt like about my PB.
Edit - no, HTH suggested in the phase inverter slot and I thought V1 too. So I got one for both. Apparently V4 can help too (according to the engl boards).
-
I have a couple of spare Cryo treated JAN 5751s from Watford valves but looks like you are sorted out now
-
The Jan phillips in V1 worked really well on my powerball, I might get one for V4 as well sounds like a good idea. Cant wait to hear your results :P
-
That would have been epic good fortune if I didnt find any, jon, and I may, just may, still take you up on it...if the cryos are any better than the normal ones.
I'll post my findings, when I have some.
-
i haven't been to the engl boards in ages. I forgot about them... i think i forgot to add them to my bookmarks when i changed to firefox. must actually bookmark them now i remember, in case anything ever comes up in the future. You mean the lordriffenstein one, right? :)

I suggested trying one in the PI, you said V1 and I concurred
V1 will have the most obvious effect - it always will with any amp. The PI just takes the edge off things overall and gives less gain in this stage.
-
I pretty much use 5751 in all my amps in V1 and the PI slot - they give a nice curtailment of gain that allows about a 1 notch drop in overall volume but stops the amp being flooded with gain - this allows you to use pedals in better.
In my experience JAN Philips are more middy and work better for bluesy tweed/marshall tone and JAN GE have more sparkle and give a better blackface/chimey Vox type tone. Of course, tubes make only a small difference to overall tone, so that is a relative and personal comparison. But given how easy it is to get NOS 5751s for a good price I wouldn't bother with new issued ones.

Yeah, thats the one!
I'll try them one at a time anyway. I want to hear the difference of each change.

MDV if this fixes your ultimate metal amp GAS, I'm going to eat my Jackson!
