Love the tone on this:

The intro bit and solo are particularly nice. Not all on the forum will like this but some may.

Nice tone!
-
Nice tone indeed! Great playing as well!
Is that one of the limited edition Hendrix Monterrey strats he's playing? It's quire weird seeing an artist using another artists replica guitar
-
Yep, it's a Monterey Strat.
Great tone and playing. You can only get that sound with a Strat neck pickup....
-
Great tone-yep that neck pickup does sound great. Using mine more and more these days.
-

Not sure what amp he was using - maybe a two rock?
I'm assuming the Monterey Strats cost a fortune!

They are limited to just 210 so I'd imagine it's definitely a mega-bucks guitar now.

210 only - that'll push the price up! Would be cheaper to get someone to do a custom paint job on a similar spec'd start!
-
Indeed. I saw a custom paint job Monterey strat in a shop on Denmark Street last time I was in London in July. I asked the guy about it and he told me it was done by a guy in Germany. They wanted £1499 for it. It was a very nice strat and the paint job was spot on.
-
GUYS... I've heard that there is a mega-cool new Gibson Hendrix strat coming out which is like TOTALLY what Jimi would have played now...
Stop living in the past

:D I was waiting for someone to mention that on this thread. Sacrilege!

it's a great video, got this performance from webster hall with the continuum album on DVD, which was strangely cheaper than the album on it's own :?. A note about the monterey strat, I saw one in denmark street a while back for £1,200 or there abouts i think - wasn't too bad in my opinion
-
mayer's a kickass player. I don't understand all the hate. Though to be fair, he's more or less unheard of here (in the mainstream, anyway), so maybe that's partly it.
-
Reminded me in a way of Dave Gilmour..

I've also got that DVD. It's on quite a bit when I'm cooking. Great stuff.

I am also baffled by the venom that he gets-he is a fine player in my view.He has a good feel.

Me too. He's a great player and a decent enough singer to boot. Good songs as well.
-
I went to high school with him. No wait, I went to high school with some pop boys who played guitar to laid and sounded exactly like him.
-

definitely. guitarists complained for years that good lead guitarists couldn't break into the mainstream, then when one does, he's gone too mainstream.
-
Great tones yeah, but god I find this guy woefully boring.
-
I can't see this particular clip at the mo (cos I'm at work), but yeah he's got a great sound/feel. Sooner or later I'm probably gonna get some of his stuff...
...but!! I can't help but fear the same thing that nfe has voiced... I got all excited about Joe Bonamassa a while back from posts on here. Great tone, fabulous player, glad I got me some CDs, but... coupla listens, and I really can't be @rsed to put them back on. I suspect I'd love to see him live, but I find the albums I've got get a bit tedious after a while... (Sorry, Joe!)
I might not have the same experience with this guy - he is a strat player after all! :D - but I dunno...
-
As an artist he's never really done anything that would make me want to buy an album.
But, he's a really good guitarist with a great tone. I think I'd be fast forwarding his songs to the solos if I had a cd but really I suppose I should buy one and give they guy ago.
I don't see anything in his playing that amazes me but what I do like is the fact he's bringing a love of the guitar and great tones to the Grammy loving mainstream. For that he should be comended. I mean he could of just been a singer and been popular.....
Also, his tone has become a modern benchmark for sweet strat tone.
I like this tone, very tasteful playing

John Mayer is a great player (and his current side man Robbie McIntosh isn't bad either!). I love his playing as he covers Hendrix, Clapton & SRV, all classy players. He admits in one of the interviews that he get's serious GAS just like us & sit at home trying different tubes in his amps (two rocks) to see if he can just get that little bit sweeter sound.
Oh and for some of his best tones check out either Gravity or slow dancing in a burning room.
-
I think he's one of the "interviewees" on the extras on the SRV at Montreux DVDs isn't he?
When I first watched them, I thought "who the f*ck is this tw@t?" and assumed he was some journo/talking-head waffling on...
I seem to remember watching them again a while back after I came across him (I think it might have been a youtube recommendation from you horsehead :D) - and I had somewhat more respect for what he was saying then
-

There's a good youtube clip of him (I think it is him) demoing a JM signature Two Rock amp by playing Slow Dancing........ It sounds very nice indeed - I must learn that little bit of melody.
No link as I'm at work and will get firewalled if I try to access youtube.

You say that like it's a bad thing :P
-

I agree. I downloaded one of his cds a while ago to check out what all the fuss was about. Although i found his playing was good etc etc, the only song i liked on it was a cover of Bold as Love. Just couldn't get on with his style of music.
-

sorry, i'm on the hate boat, everytime i'm forced to listen to that w**ker I wanna puke
-
I don't understand the hate towards John Mayer. He is an excellent player and writes some really good music too.
-
I wouldn't go so far as "hate", but I can see why people don't like him.
He's a fine player and no doubt very talented, but his voice is whiny and the songs (those I've heard).... just don't do anything for me.
I think the word that sums him up for me is "bland".
-

it mainly goes something along the lines of he's this decent-guitar player writes songs for your mother and then happens to be he goes out with Jennifer Anniston suddenly gets massively popular tries to pass himself off as something better of a blues player (wowzers I have a signature strat! lets play your body is a wonderland) and then parades around with eric clapton like he's the new guitar hero of the 21st century (i'm sure all the rolling stone press did wonders.)
If there is ANY blues player that deserves to be recognized its Joe Bonamassa, but mainstream=fail
-
I'm kind ok about him, he plays very good... his voice is a little too "whispered", intended to make 15-20y.o. girls go crazy (like Bon Jovi) IMO... What doesn't mean that it's bad music or that I don't like it, there is some musics that I like (from both)
But sometimes I think he's getting a little arrogant... But I may be wrong, saw this video again, that I thought he was really arrogant when got the SRV Lenny clone and, watching it again, thoght he's normal...

Bought the CD. I think it will be some easy listening for the car, rather than OTT listening.
-
It is decent in the car. I play it sometimes on the way to work when I don't want to have my ears basehd by high energy rock!
-
Speaking of him using other peoples signature gear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjUq_Z3b1Y4 (VH content)
He's 1 of those guys I've heard mentioned around guitar forums but have never heard anything of apart from his cover tunes.
Might try and track some down for a further listen, along with Kenny Wayne Sheppard (sp?)
-
Cheers Brow and Fernando - I hadn't seen those before. Not bad although I can see why some people would think he was arrogant in the first vid with all those guitars.

Cripes, his playing's abysmal in that!

He also does the 'solo' in the Fall Out Boy cover of Beat It. It's sodding abysmal. [url]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI-0Hgu8mUk[url] starts about 2 minutes in.
-
Actually, that gave me more Tele GAS than anything.... (3:55---)

..... but no worse than a typical EVH live performance.

He really sucks balls when he tries to play rock....
