Title: Budget Rack Gear
Post by: Jonny on September 29, 2009, 09:11:00 PM
I went to Jonathan's today and apart from the awesome guitar set up (which is surprising cause I don't have to wait a week for it to be done!)

He played his Lion (and my Indie) into his Plexi module, etc. with a G-Major, etc. etc. and in the end I was simply AMAZED.

So- just a thought really, anyone suggest some good budget rack gear?

Poweramp
Preamp
Power Supply
Effects

I've currently seen a G-Major or a Rocktron Intellifex, and some other things but would like advice.

Thanks!

Pre an power amp in one rack space, perfect for a practice rig and can be retrofit into a big-boy's rig later on:

I've previously owned the 530 and quite frankly... I have no idea what the fuss is about. To me it souded a bit dead and solid state-ish?

For a decent pre with a budget I recommend Peavey Rockmaster or Rocktron Piranha. Both are discontinued so you have to get them second hand. These are real tone monsters for the buck.

edit: e530 is only a preamp afaik...

If you also want a case to put the rack gear in I've got a few of the ABS plastic cases from http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/flightcasewarehouse19_ABS-Plastic_W0QQ_fsubZ6320069QQ_sidZ380983142QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322 & they're really good for the money.  They're the same ones that Studio Spares & the like stock, but lower price.

Johnny - you should have heard Oli's ADA MP1 that he brought to the BKP meet - sounded great (and that's coming from me)

A great simple rack

Samson PS10 power supply(i use this)
ADA, Rocktron Piranha, Boogie studio, ENGL or other great preamp rack (i've used this before - now selling because the Egnater and Randall  does it all for me now)
TC G major FX unit (i use this)
BBE sonic maximiser (i use this)
Power amp and cab
OR great combo that can have the rack run through it's FX loop to use it's power section.

Otherwise look at the Randall RM20 combo or the new RM22 head when it finally comes out

For sale : I have 2 of these babies - great fun!

it has a small solid state power amp built in. 5 watts is it? i forget. i have one, can't use that feature though. what they don't tell you is you need a stereo cab to be able to use the power amp. anyone know how it sounds through this? i'm a bedroom player mainly, and if it sounds good through that, i may sell my cab and get a stereo cab rather than getting a power amp.

and spitfire, i'd love that peavey if it was a few months down the road and exchange rates to US weren't terrible...

Oli's MP1 sounded great indeed, and its really easy to play through, makes it easy for you to do all the 80s things we love. Tried Feline's Piranha and its a gain monster, hard to track down, but I did like it. I'm using a couple of sansamp rack preamps myself. I like the Mr Scary module (whichever one is the one with the skulls?) the best.

ADA MP1
Marshall JMP1
Tech21 PSA 1 if you can find one they can be had cheap sometimes

For poweramps I'd look Peavey 50/50, just recently one was for sale on here cheap.

Effect wise if you only need delay/reverb/chorus, can't go much better than Lexicon MX200, it sounds awesome for the $$.

Edit: it's still for sale the Peavey: http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=18090.0;topicseen
