Title: Pickup suggestions for Organic Classic
Post by: Stu on October 04, 2009, 07:36:42 PM
Hi,

I've got a left handed Organic Classic (Paduak body and neck, maple top and ebony board) and want a pickup change. As it was the first lefty Duncan made it has a JB in the bridge and Jazz neck.
I'm looking for a bridge pickup with a more full sound as the JB sounds thin. I quite like the jazz but would like both pickups to be slightly hotter. I'm going for a modern rock sound with warm articulate and harmonic tones. I play through a Vox AC15 heritage and use a T-rex Mud honey for OD sounds.
I may contact Duncan direct as I understand he now sells his guitars with Custom wound BKP's but wanted to get some suggestions on here first.
I'm aiming for this to compliment my new Gus G1 which is in the Strat ballpark and is especially good for blues and funk so the organic would ideally be for straight out rock.
Cheers!

Holy Diver?
Or is that too hot?

Maybe Nailbombs? They're labelled as part of the "contemporary" range, but they're quite classically voiced, very open and dynamic pickups. They can, of course, bring the heavies when you need them :)
If they sounds a little too metal, maybe consider the Rebel Yells, which are in a similar ballpark to the Nailbomb in voicing, but not as hot, with a tad more vintage toothiness.
Also, the Crawlers could be worth a thought as well - extra-hot PAF tone, with a smooth high end and very fat midrange.

The Crawlers are indeed pretty good for everything rock - from 60s to more contemporary tones. Have them on an all-maple Vox (very bright and tight),  the bridge is sharp and cutting, yet still warm, ringing cleans, grinding rythm and riffs with some OD - and man, it has the power to push your amp into serious overdrive -, and singing and warms lead under heavier distortion. The neck is much more rounded, absolutely wonderful in cleans (can even do jazz) and slight OD (think Beano), and very smooth and sustaining when pushing the amp. Both are _very_ articulate, even with higher gain settings you still hear each individual note.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sounds like if I want out and out rock then maybe the Nailbombs would be good. I'm not really looking to use it for metal but definitely hard rock.

I got a nailbomb bridge in my LP and like you I don't play any metal, but a great varity of rock. The nailbomb suits hard rock nicely, but I find it too agressive for more classic rock. Might just be me though. I think (without having played any of the following) that the Rebel Yell, Crawler or maybe Abraxas could be good options opposed to the Nailbomb.

+1
nailbomb is VERY aggressive for an alnico pup
loud, punchy and very focused and dense tone
not really warm, imo
rebel yell won't sound fatter than a JB

Thanks for your input.

I've been looking at clips of those suggested but its hard to compare when you haven't got them in the same guitar. I'm looking to play anything ranging from Zeppelin to Satriani. If any one has heard an Organic with BKP's in then it would be great to hear your views.
My main issue is that the JB in the bridge position always sounds a bit thin and brittle.

I emailed Tim and he recommends Nailbombs to cover a good range of rock tones. Can any one tell me how well they perform doing classic rock and more clean tones as most of the clips I've seen are modern metal.

Cheers for all the input

I find that my nailbomb bridge does cleans quite well, but like I said earlier in this thread I find it too agressive for more classic rock, but that's just my oppinion.

What would be the best choice if I wanted something slightly less aggressive than the Nailbomb in order for it to suit classic rock whilst still covering some heavy rock styles also?

The Nailbomb would be great.

The thing about the Nailbomb is that you can get such a great range of rock tones just by wonding down the volume control.

i play metal, so mine is a metalhead biased view (;)) but i think that nailbomb should give you brilliant rock tones as well... don't forget that matt bellamy uses nailbombs too and he (wether you like muse or not) certainly doesn't play metal!

I still find the nailbomb too agressive when I back down the volume. Maybe it's just me  :)

If you want something a little less agressive than nailbomb I think Rebel Yell would be the way to go.

Thanks for all your input,

I'm ready to take the plunge and get a pair of nailbombs and just want to check, do you get life time warranty if a luthier orders the pickups for you? or is it only if you as the customer order them directly from Tim?

Duncan, the guy who built my guitar is going to fit them and give the guitar a long overdue setup etc and I just wanted to check that I wont lose out on the warranty if he orders the pickups.

Thanks

Hi,

warmoth described Paduak as "tone similar to maple with great mids and attack". With a maple top and an ebony fretboard, that describes as a very tight sounding guitar.

Crawlers might be very good, see BigB's post. Those pickups would also do classic rock and do it well  :)

About Rebel Yell vs. Nailbomb; Rebel Yell has aggressive mids, and not that much bottom (at least to my ear). It's brightish and voiced to sound great in an LP, I probably wouldn't choose it for this guitar..
