My god this is a GREAT album! Songs, songs, songs front and center... He could really teach Vai a thing or two about "entertainment".
Awesome guitar and Freddie Nelson's f**king fabulous vocals. Can you guess I'm loving this album after 2/3 listens?
It doesn't get annoying and isn't over used but Freddie shares quite an astonishing vocal resemblance with a Mr Mercury!
I recommend you check it out

I thought it was the least entertaining thing Paul Gilbert has ever done. That statement about Vai seems completely cookoo to me and before I get flamed I'm gonna say "to each his own".
-
I think guitarists forget that "songs" are what 99.8% of the worlds people enjoy.
It's often nice to smile & dance and sing....
-
I haven't forgotten that. And it's exactly the songs that makes me think this album is subpar. The U2/Coldplay vibe just doesn't do anything for me anymore. Paul did excellent songwriting with Mr. Big and on his solo records. It isn't all widdlywiddlywoo.
-
but this is...
....................widdlywiddlywoo.............. POP!  (
I think that's a new sub-genre :?)
-
Yeah don't get me wrong I didn't hate the album, I just think he can do and has done much better. Check out the album he did with his uncle Jimi Kidd for some great good-time blues rock.

but Vai's a virtuoso! Thats like telling Yo Yo-Ma to play "a song!"

I love the album, but it did take me a few listens to get into it. And thats coming from a real Gilbert fanboy.
Its worth repeat listens.

Forgive my ignorance, but who the hell is Freddie Nelson?

Forgive my ignorance, but who the hell is Freddie Nelson?
That was gonna be my question.
I do find most "virtuoso" rock guitarists woeful (since they're generally far more compelled to simply show off (but have far less ability) than the virtuosi of other styles) but I quite like Paul Gilbert, he's usually clearly just having a fun and a bit of an arse around, but happens to be able to play like hell.
-
Freddie is pretty much just an unknown singer who comes from the same town as Paul. He was well known in the area and was recommended to Paul as being a great singer and Freddie-a-like. They got together and made this album.

I enjoyed this too.Clearly they are having a great time and that is valuable in these times.
-
It's a real joy to hear.
Happiness, kittens, good times, puppies, hugs, harmonies and shredding guitars....
FUN! That's the best medicine... :P
