Title: Jackson KV-2 needs pickups for all kinds of metal
Post by: DimeZakk on October 08, 2009, 10:30:46 PM
I sold a guitar and got an even better one: A US Jackson King V!!!

Maple neckthrough, alder wings, ebony fretboard and a floyd rose, it's one hell of a guitar but the Sh-4 isn't my favourite pickup in the world so they have to go.
I am looking to cover a lot of metal genres with this guitar, from Maiden and Priest to Megadeth and Metallica to Lamb of God and Pantera. I know that is a lot of diffrent genres to cover -.-
The bridge should give me a tight rythm sound for Megadeth, Iced Earth and alike and the leads shouldn't be too trebly as the guitar is bright already and it should give me good harmonics for some Dimebag sqeaulies! The neck will propably be a Cold sweat because it's just my favourite neck bkp!

It's gray see-trough with silver hardware so I need some feedback on which color/cover i should get^^

That description basically screams Nailbomb. It's the most versatile beast of the range, it can do very aggressive sounding stuff and still has a unique tone for leads. Excellent choice especially for megadeth stuff. The alnico magnet gives it a really meaty overall character but you can still easily get wild harmonic squeals á la Dime.

Painkiller could be a bit over the top with the attack. Good for NWOBHM type of stuff I suppose.

Miracle Man is probably the most modern sounding and tone-wise would be closest to Pantera.

Ceramic Warpig is the one and only balls to the wall type of pickup. You can forget about clean sounds, you can get it to clean up but the overall tone will still sound a bit bulky I guess. This one is a real grinder with a thick lead tonal quality, not so vocal as Nailbomb but good nevertheless.

I put a Painkiller bridge & Cold Sweat neck in my KV2 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11615.0) & it slays  :)  Yes it's bright but not unpleasantly so & the mids of the Painkiller really give it the "chunk" that it's missing with the stock JB.

Clips here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11926.0) & here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11727.0)

My second choice (or what I would put in when if I bought a second one) would be a Holy Diver set because it's absolutely fantastic in my RR1T (& just about ever other guitar with alder body or maple neck-thru w/alder wings) - would probably cover all the styles you describe (yes, even Pantera).

What are you planning to tune it to?  (The above comments are based on Eb...)

& FWIW, I'd stick with open poled black rather than covers....

I plan to play the KV in d-standard for now, maybe I will set it up for drop c or c standard later on...but i guess all contemporary BKPs handle downtunings!

Ceramic Warpig is too over-the-top for my taste (had one, didn't like it). With the ceramic pickups I fear that it could get to harsh and trebly in this guitar -.-
Nailbomb seems to be the logical choice because I don't know how the Holydiver handles fast thrash picking (although it would propably give me the best lead tone)

All input is welcome before I contact the MAN himself^^

I second the ceramic nailbomb option.

It's gray see-trough with silver hardware so I need some feedback on which color/cover i should get^^

You'll probably like the C-Bomb a lot.

eeee, i disagree completely. yes, it does way over the top stuff with such ease, it's not funny anymore, but it does VERY nice cleans.. it even cleans up on a dirty amp.. yeah, dont come expecting jazzy fendery cleans, because that's preposterous, but like any of the BKP range, it's as versatile as a swiss army knife. though, the real treat lies in the amp and what it can do.

though, if you're going to downtune, i'd suggest the Miracle Man in the bridge (don't ask me about what to put in the neck, cos i only have a VH2 .. and while it does the job, i don't like humbuckers in the neck, in fact i prefer 1 humbucker setups) it'll stay clear as a bell, the riffing will sound brutal and even across the range. if you're too worried about the low end, order it with allen head pole pieces, it'll add some low end and smooth out the top.

in any way, ask tim about it. just call and give him the info, he'll point you the right way.

Yep, davey has it there.

The c-pig is NOT the only balls to the wall BK.

The c-pig is very versatile. Moreso than the miracle man, about as much as the painkiller, nealy as much as the c-bomb.

A lot of you guys said C-Bomb, Tim says C-Bomb ... I'll get a C-Bomb with a cold sweat neck right away when I'll order the 7String pickups for my other guitar. Now I just have to come up with money for 4 pickups... ^^

Thanks guys!

Oh and I will deliver some pics sooner or later!

Pigs are fat as fark, but really respond well to the volume knob.

Not tried a C-bomb. I never got on with the A-bomb but I I'm kind of interested.

As for the overwound Cold Sweat comment. Um, The 6 string that I have completely blows aways the 6 string Miracle Man in another guitar (girth and overall volume!).

That's one stunning V ! Congrat !

With that finish you can go on with many cover options (chrome, black, distressed, even burnt chrome)....as well as open poled in black color.....

look at this one : http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16919.0
