Title: 7 String guitars!
Post by: Venemous on October 16, 2009, 09:49:31 PM
Hey there guys, I've been kind of interested in getting a 7 string for awhile now, but I'm not sure of the direction to go in.

I would like to play things kind of in the line of Trivium's 7 string type stuff, and maybe even tune around and pull off some Meshuggah (if it's possible on a 7 ).

Mostly, I want a new toy in my arsenal.

Now, having played a few 7's, I know FOR SURE that I want a baritone 7. A standard 25.5 scale was NOT sufficiently tight for the low B on the few 7's I have played.

I would also prefer if it didn't have EMG's (for obvious reasons :)). They really limit what you can do with the guitar, since they would probably be 707's, which are a huge body route

So, fire away! I'm just looking for some helpful suggestions to get the wheels rolling. Thanks for your responses!

It is definately difficult to get one without EMG's. I'de go for a rg7321 to be honest until you know you want one.

Good for modding and they maintain well. And if you find that you're not into it at least you haven't spent a bomb. Other than that I think the Agiles look really good.

I have a Jackson 7 string, not sure what model it is, but it's stonking! Sounds beautiful and has a really thin neck. Dunno what kind of bridge you're after but mine is a Floyd, which I'm not entirely keen on. I may even think about selling it at some point so I can use the money to replace it with a fixed bridged axe.

I think either a schecter blackjack c7 or an agile 727 would be your best bets both are availble with normal humbuckers (seymour duncan's in the schecter).
Also most 7 strings ship with 9-54 strings which would feel floppy regardless. I find the d'addario 10-59 7 string set tight enough for standard tuning.

An Agile 7-string would be good, and cheap, then there's Schecter 7s and Ibanez 7s but for Ibanez its usually the discontinued models that are nicer.

I have a RG7321 for sale :P

I've got a hardtail Jackson 7 (which i'm selling, as it happens ;))... it is 25.5, however... but it plays beautifully.... i'd be wary (personally) of SS.org, as there seems to be an incredibly high number of 'armchair experts', who've never tried gear, but will praise it/slag it off until the cows come home!

Baritone 7s are not that common really, i don't think any of the 'major' brands (Jackson, ESP, etc.) have any?

Pick up a used Ibanez 7421 or 7621 if you can. There are plenty around and have better components that the 7321. But that's just me. I have a 7621 and it's a nice guitar. 25.5 scale, though. I use a 10 - 46 + 59 on it...

Schecters are OK too - I have a C7 Hellraiser - but they are very different to play. Chunky necks. 26.5 scale.

I've not played any Agile 7 strings but I do have an 8 string Intrepid (28.625 scale). Build quality's good, although they're not quite as much of a bargain as they were with the stronger pound.

My other 2 7s are 25.5, both strung 10 - 46 + 59. I've gone up as far as .064 for the low B, but to be honest being used to 10 - 46, a 59 of a 60 for the low B seems to be pretty consistant. 56, as per some sets, feels too loose.

Baritone 7s? Um the ESP SC607B was baritone, Schecter 7s are slightly longer scale then standard, Ibanez XLs are 27inch.

I have a 7321, and while its not top notch by any stretch, once the (dreadfull) pickups are replaced, I have no problem with the guitar.
