Title: Are late 70's Strats wired RWRP by default?

Hi - does anyone know if late 70's Strats wired RWRP?

Currently playing a '79 Strat and I figured it may be but am curious to know if any hard core Strat guru's would know

According to Wikipedia (make of that what you will! :lol:) they introduced RW/RP middle pickups in 1977.

Which surprised me, I didn't realise they'd done it before the American Standard in '86.

I played my guitar last night in the hall where there is also a hearing loop. Usually, in other Strats, selecting positions 2 and 4 eliminate the feedback generated from the loop.

The 79 Strat I played last night didnt make any difference in which pickup was selected, hence my question of whether 70's Strats are RWRP.

But, the "quack" in this Strat is amazing, and I always thought "quack" was a result of RWRP? Is "quack" still generated from non RWRP setups? The quack in this 79 strat is awesome and I love it.

I'm not too fussed about the non RWRP set up if that is the case, but would love to hear from other Strat users if they have had any similar experiences.

I believe the "quack" is more prominent if they're not RWRP?

The "quack" is there whether the middle pickup is RW/RP or not.

Some people say RW/RP emphasises the "quack", but I suspect that may be an illusion simply because there's less background hum.

Mine defintiely quacks a lot. I'm not sure if it's RWRP though! I really should know how my guitar is set up.

I also thought that it started in the 1980's.

I have gotten my paws on numerous late 1970's Strat pickups (the early ones are too rich for my blood) and I am yet to find a RWRP one, for what it's worth.

I think what did change in '77 was the introduction of the 5-way switch.

So maybe they confused that with the introduction of RW/RP?
