Title: distortion pedals
Post by: Lukie on October 20, 2009, 07:57:11 PM
Hi guys what distortion pedals do you use with your BKPs? im looking for something that works well with a tube amp to remove some of the dynamics, add some sustain, and dirty up the sound even more :guitar4:  Any suggestions?

I love my Digitech Hardwire CM-2. It's llike adding a whole new level of headroom on your signal. It also works nice with a clean amp for smooth overdrive sounds.

Does it work well with the drive channels too?

I don't usually use distortion pedals, I usually just use the overdrive channel on my amp. For a boost though I often use the Digitech Bad Monkey and an Ibanez Tube Screamer.

A great distortion pedal that I used live for quite a few years was the Digitech Grunge pedal. I think it's an underrated pedal, it sounds fantastic!

Marshall Guv'nor or ToneRider British Distortion are my choice.

Danelectro Cool Cat distortion (which is pretty much a Crunch Box clone, itself a Guv'nor clone) is my current fave.  But in the past I used a Monte Allums tri-gain mod Boss DS1 which was a terrible pedal pre-mod but awesome afterwards.  Unfortunately it died on me.

Well, depends quite a lot on your amp - my GV2 didn't cut it on my old Marshall jcm900, and works like a charm with our singer's Peavey Classic 30. Also depends on what kind of grain you're after.

FWIW, I currently drive my Blues Junior with a Dano Coolcat Transparent OD (CTO-1) and a Biyang DS8 Mouse (a cheap but good RAT clone). I use the CTO (great OD for a ridiculous price)  to just add some more grit and drive while mostly preserving the tone and dynamic, the Mouse to go into more heavy yet still articulated distortion - and both together when I really mean business

Now would you like any of these pedals in your signal chain is another question (well, I bet you'd like the CTO anyway, but it would not fit your above specs - doesn't compress much, and yes, it's actually a feature).

BYOC Mouse, MOSFET clipping for Overdrive.

Sounds good but want something a bit more plug and play.  6 position rotarty switch and toggle switch mods make it pretty hard to get the right sound quickly on stage.

That said, there is a massive amount of tonal options with this pedal.
