Anyone planning to watch this?
I suspect that it will probably have the highest viewing figures ever...
-
i planned on going into work to see if i could get in teh studio or observation gallery, but i bet that wont happen, or the curtain will be over the gallery.
personally, i think this dudes rubbish needs a debate so that people can see the idiotic flaws in his policies.

Absolutely. I see no value in denying a buffoon his right to talk cr@p.
-
i walked past goldsmiths uni, (i live near there, its in south east london and it has a free cash machine inside it that i use) and there was all kinds of protest and petitions with the aim of stopping the BNP having a platform for speech on the BBC. I thought about it a while ago when i worked on a show in manchester that had the then head of the youth BNP on a panel show. before he even got in the building protests where being sent to the channel.
all that happened was during the show, every time he opened his mouth, something so dumb came out that everybody around him just shut him down.

I agree.
I have a friend who's extremely "old Labour", she doesn't think he should be on and is getting involved in all these protests. But personally, I think they should give Griffin the rope and let him hang himself (metaphorically - or literally for all I care).
I normally watch Question Time every week, but I'll be out tonight so I'll have to watch it on iPlayer.
-
I'll be watching tonight. There are some highly intelligent comments on BBC about it:
"yes yes yes cant wait to watch it ,they have lots of good things to say i love it"
"Of course he should. And he should be allowed to convey the views of the vast majority of the British people. Rule Britannia!"
"Personally I will boycott this program and I believe every one else should do so too"
I think there will be some heated debates.

Well said Sir ! Give him enough rope ....
-
Personally I don't think there is a problem with him being on it. As much as I think the BNP are a MASSIVE bunch of arseholes, they've been voted in to some local councils, so it would be undemocratic to deny them a voice.
The fact that people have voted for them (in numbers big enough for them to get into some councils) means that a portion of the country agrees with the right wing knobheads and so their views (no matter how biggoted and just plain stupid) are no more or less valid than anyone elses.
-
He has the right to be on it I believe? so why not... Will be a good watch
The people protesting are raising the awareness of it and making more people know of his cause - I should think that's exactly what he wants. Then Griff can say well actually they are wrong in how they spun it and he will make it all sound like fluffy clouds and winged angels.
-
he will make it all sound like fluffy clouds and winged angels.
White ones, presumably.
-
i too disagree with everything he has to say, but would defend his right to say it. it's better to have such idiocy out in the open than fermenting away in the underground. if they're banned from open debate they have their righteous indignation and can rant to each other all the more about how they are being marginalised in their own country. i just hope he does make a fool of himself and his organisation. my fear would be that he'll go on to the programme and come across well.
the thing is, it won't make any difference. the people that disagree with him will see what he says as bigoted nonsense and his followers will lap it up.
the protesters have a right to protest about his views, but not to stop him appearing. if anyone does attack him physically, all they're doing is sinking to his level.
-

Yes ; whilst I am not an overtly political creature, I feel they are employing the ( usual extremist throughout history ) mechanism of hi-jacking certain general public concerns over things like NHS and Benefits 'loading' - and then using it as leverage for their own brand of extremist beliefs. I therefore suspect that if they have had any success thus far, perhaps more would be acheived in the longer term , by further exposing the flawed thinking and ( in doing so ) hope to re-educate / enlighten the people who did vote for them originaly. However, having written that - I fear that perhaps the sort of voter that fell for such a 'party' in the first place , might be beyond rationalising and changing direction at a later date. We can but hope that reason will prevail.

i agree with this. i think this is a major issue. making people already distant from current politicians etc... feel like they should band together even more because those people are trying to suppress their views.
(EDIT: i just read this back and i realised id pidgeon holed the right wing voter a bit too much.)
I also however... think that the debate needs bringing out because certain things done out of none racially biased patriotism (for example) can be labelled as such.
I was talking about this with the missus. shes from the area of leeds with the highest voting BNP numbers. She told me how at the british library, some people came to work with st george's cross lapel pins on on the morning of st george's day., not people who are right wing crazies, but people who want to embrace their heritage. they were told to remove them by management.
(EDIT: my missus aint right wing... haha. we were just having this chat as she came past the uni with me and saw the protest also. by embrace their heritage, i mean people who actually want to celebrate st george's day in some way, thats all.......SEE now im panicking because i think by saying this stuff you'll all think the I vote BNP! )
that kind of thing is as damaging as not allowing the BNP to speak.
p.s. I think St George's Day, Morris Dancing and Folk Music is awesome. that doesn't make me a racist nazi.

Perhaps the saddest and most damaging aspect of any extremist influence in the U.K. is the way in which the action / reaction threatens to remove the ability for us to live in a sane balance. The 'Politically incorrect' giving rise to a whole equal and opposite flavour of unworkable 'Politically correct'. A thorny issue indeed.

Wasn't St George Turkish anyway :?

seriously though... for ages, i felt that the welsh, and scottish and irish have these really interesting surviving traditions and so on. like Gaelic Football and so on. I really didnt know what my history was, I don't speak a more ancient language than English.
I once went to a beer festival by the canal near where i lived, and they had EVIL looking morris dancers. sounds crazy, but it was pretty cool. also, the Folk Proms the BBC did was really very interesting.
i watched this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMhYho7trGs
you cant deny thats good.
since then i found out about Lancashire Catch Wrestling, which dates back before the Roman empire.
I think small things like that are amazing. maybe its just me. I'd rather find those things interesting than try my best to be american or from anywhere else. not that i hate americans, im just not american.
its just sad that if i was to say im interested in english traditions, that some people may assume i vote for the BNP.
i hope that makes sense

Well put
I dislike BNP/ National Front politics and hatred but I am also sick of the fact that we cant have a SENSIBLE discussion on Immigration and border controls and who is eligible for the UKs benefits /NHS/ whatever without being branded a rascist by the right on brigade.
If you visit America their passport control and border security are pretty harsh even to holiday makers whilst I feel we dont take enough adequate/appropriate measures in this country.
By all means let Griffin on and surely he will show himself up for the bigot that he is
But let proper discussion of the issues be had also without branding anyone who raises "awkward" questions as a BNP fanatic or fascist (which is just a lazy and convenient, but unfair way of dismissing a valid argument)
-
Jonathon - good point - IMHO, one of the reasons that the BNP is attracting a share of the vote is because none of the other parties will have a sensible debate around those issues. They are running scared of the 'racist' card and therefore bury their heads - surely it would be better to actually tackle and debate these issues in the open, rather than adopt the 'ostrich postition' and then cry 'foul!' (or should that be 'fowl!' ??) when the BNP actually win seats??

Morris Dancing is cool, even if half of it really dates back only to the late 19th century folk revival - although Dmoney there's little morris dancing going on in New Cross!
Along with Lancashire Catch Wrestling one should not forget the Victorian martial art of Bartjitsu - how to smack ruffians with an umbrella!

+1, I don't see how you can ban people from saying stuff while still having freedom of speech, and with any luck if you give them enough rope they'll just hang themselves anyway. if their policies are as idiotic as everyone thinks (and they are), it shouldn't be too hard to defeat them in a debate, kind of thing.

I'm from Burscough. I've lived in london for a few years now.
The morris dancing and beer festival used to be at The Ship Inn (aka The Blood Tub) in Lathom by that stretch of the Leed to Liverpools canal.
Bartitsu looks good. haha. there is also a guy teaching catch wrestling in wales.

Chris who used to work for me was involved in a couple of Morris teams

Sorry for the ignorance, but whats BNP? British nationalist party or something?
Yeah i say let them go for it on tv, everytime ive ever seen any white power groups on tv they always seem like the biggest meatheads around.
played a show last night with uk subs and there was quite a big skinhead presence, one dude was outside sniffing glue calling me and my friend N-words(were both white as), hopefully they get guys as on to it as him on the show to make them look even more stupid
-
Well, turned out there was little to fear there.
I was itching for a member of the audience to ask what i wanted asked, though:
"Scuse me Nick, old son, but do you plan on giving any substantive answers tonight, or are you planning to spend the entire evening nervously laughing whilst drowning in your own sweat?"
