Title: Telecaster pickups
Post by: TJguitar on October 24, 2009, 05:50:16 AM
i've been wanting to change the tele for a while now and have heard great thing about bkp's
i'm looking for a thicker more "tele on steroids" sound in the bridge so i figured the piledriver would probably be the best choice in that respect....but i'm wanting my clean tone to be more in the vain of jeff buckley's (i.e more chimey and less thick) so i'm wondering if i should be looking at a different pickup in the neck or if the piledriver would suffice on both counts.

thoughts?

The neck Piledriver, while well-matched, isn't the raucous affair that the bridge unit is. It's got all the lovely chiming Tele neck tones that you want I would imagine. Even the bridge pickup can be tamed down to more traditional Tele sounds by rolling off the volume. Extremely cool set of pickups IMO.

how much gain would i be sacraficing if i was to put the boss set in instead of the piledrivers? and what are their clean sounds like?

I was going to put a Piledriver in the bridge of my tele, and pair it with a Boss, but after discussion with Tim he recommended (and I bought) Piledriver Bridge and Yardbird Neck. The combination is very, very nice.

Out of interest, what kind of tone were you after from the neck pickup which the Piledriver or Boss neck models weren't suitable for?

I wanted my tele to be really versatile---rock, reggae, jazz, funk, pretty much everything. I knew I wanted a PD in the bride but thought that one in the neck would limit the versatility a bit. I use the middle position a lot so wanted two pickups that would work well together; Tim recommended the Yardbird as a good match for the PD.

It sounds an interesting combo, and not one I ever would've thought of.  :)

Got to agree with you Philly. It is not a combination that I would have thought of. Still Tim knows gis stuff!

Sometimes I think of buying another tele just so that I can try out another set of BKPs.

I find the Piledriver a bit too compressed for me. The Boss is still very rich, but its a touch more open. Very much a hot pickup though - drives my Marshall 2204 with no issues. Feline is also a fan of the Boss.
