Title: Modern metal - Which Pickups?
Post by: Euthanasia on October 25, 2009, 01:43:03 AM
Hey guys

I am thinking of gettings some new pickups for my guitar.
I play some low-tune modern metal (Methcore, metalcore, etc.) and seek for a tight and crushing lows, yet organic, dynamic, Smooth and 'breathing' sound.

I have BKP on my other (Ceramic Warpig and Cold Sweat) and never heard better pickups. on the other side, I want to try something new.
So the Options for me (I think) should be Painkiller, ceramic Nailbomb or Nailbomb.

My Ceramic warpig is tight as hell (which I like!) but i wish for a little more dynamic and organic tone, and not as bass heavey.
And on the neck I wish for some sweeter tone, more lows punch and output then I have with my cold sweat. I was thinking about a neck-Nailbomb.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Itamar.

No, not a Nailbomb neck - less lows than the CS.  A Miracle Man neck would match your description a bit better IMHO.  If you like the level of power in the CS neck but just want a more "vintage" feel, the VHII is a great neck pickup.

As for the bridge, couldn't really make my mind up :)  was thinking Alnico Warpig until you said "not as bass heavy".  Painkiller is probably a better bet, but depends what you mean by "organic" because PK is also very tight.

Miracle Man, totally.

If I'm right, miracle man is pretty mid scoop, which I totally dont what.
I am looking for more of a tight lows and more of a organic highs. is there such a thing?

If I take the regural nailbomb and put it on the neck will it be too hot?
I'm not looking for a vintage tone, but looking for a warm yet not muddy tone..

cold sweat

I'd suggest trying a ceramic Nailbomb in the bridge, with an alnico 8 Nailbomb neck. The A8 nailbomb neck has a significantly warmer tone than the regular A5, but with a more vintage feel than the Cold Sweat.

Thanks!
Anyone else think ceramic Nailbomb will fit me better than Painkiller? Will it be agrassive and tight enaugh in the lower register and wouldnt have scoop mids?

The c-bomb has the tightest low end of any pickup I've ever played (which includes all the BK contemporaries save the HD, which apperantly isnt that tight anyway). Its not scooped at all; its mids are quite level.

Thank you MDV!
How will it be compare to the c-Warpig i have (which I love exept from the thigs I mentioned) and the Painkiller (frequency/dynamic/organic tone/output-wise)?

By odins eyepatch man! I could write all night on it, and I have things to do!

In terms of compression
C-pig > C-Bomb > PK.

Same for output.

Reverse it for dynamics and then, bearing in mind this is subject to how you play as well, its (in my experience, having had them all of these in the same guitar) CNB>PK>C-Pig for overall controlability. The PK and cnb arent too far off in terms of dynamics, but the PKs huge high mid attack can be hard to control. The CNB being more level, slightly hotter and generally sweeter sounding add up to make it the most playable of these 3 by quite a ways (the cpig being a bit too level to be fully dynamic by comparison due to its huge output and having the greatest compression). The c-bomb is the tightest and punchiest in the low mids and is the smoothest and most organic, cpig thickest and hottest, PK has the most attack in the high mids and general grind

And I'm gonna stop there and just tell you that you want a c-bomb. You described the differences between it and a warpig already, or some of them at least, or one way to describe some of the differences (see sig) in your op

"tight and crushing lows, yet organic, dynamic, Smooth [sic] and 'breathing' sound.
"

"My Ceramic warpig is tight as hell (which I like!) but i wish for a little more dynamic and organic tone, and not as bass heavey [sic]."

Haha thanks again MDV, youre the man!!

Two last (I think) questions:
1. I asked tim the same question and he was recommending the PK for bridge..
He also said, somehow, that the PK will be hotter than the C-bomb, despite the facr the Nailbpb is hotter than the PK. how could it be?

2. What do you ,MDV, reccomend for the neck?

You all other people are more than wellcome to add your opinion aswell!
And Thank you all again (:

i love my alnico nailbombs but i think that the c-bomb (never tried it but MDV described it very convincingly...) should suit better your needs, the A-NB isn't that tight.

i wouldn't choose a neck NB, though... it's definitely sharper and brighter than the CS. you'll certainly love the neck MM.

Strange, Tim himseld said he thinks the nailbomb will fit me..
And the MM is ceramic, which I dont wont, because I want the sweeter sound of alnicos in the neck but with more power than my CS I got on the neck..

i found NB tightness more than enough for my playing, but some other user that focuses his playing style on extreme tightness finds them a bit loose (i'm talking about the alnico set, of course!). tonally you'll love the bridge NB, i can't see why you shouldn't! :)
in the MM set just the bridge pickup is ceramic, the neck one has got an alnico magnet. the only ceramic neck BKP is the Painkiller.

Oh I see..
But as I heard, MM is pretty mid scopped and compressed. which are two chracters I dont really want..

I head the MM is pretty compressed and mid scooped which are characters I dont want In a pickup. Is it the same with the alnico neck version?

The MM neck is very overlooked IMHO... I love what I've heard and I found it very clear and harmonically rich. Not scooped at all.

He means that not many people recommend it which is unfortunate because the Miracle Man neck pickup is great.

It's also a perfect match for the description "on the neck I wish for some sweeter tone, more lows punch and output then I have with my cold sweat." :)
