I recently got a used VHII and it's supposed to be a bridge version - but I checked the resistance and it measures 8.37. I'm wondering if this could actually be a neck version. The BKP site doesn't list the resistance for the neck position pickups. I'm planning to use try this out in the bridge position of a dark LP copy anyway, but I'm just curious if I might have been mislead about this particular pickup.
So can anyone tell me what the resistance generally is for a neck VHII?

It's YOU!

Hi Jim - yeah it's me. :P

Hey Gary! Welcome to the board!

It could very well be a VHII bridge, pickups can vary between actual and listed DCR (my HD is listed as 16k on the site but the card that came with it said it was wound to 15.6k). 8.37 is quite close to that of a Mule bridge though, but the Mule is AIV whereas the VHII is AV, so I suggest you let your ears tell you what's good :D

Yes I am going to try it out and see if I like it. I just though that 8.37 to 9.2 is wider range than I'm used to seeing. I've always checked my pickups, mainly out of curiosity, and I've never had as large of a discrepancy. 16 to 15.6 is not nearly as wide a difference. If things will be off so much why bother with decimals? If it was 8.9 I probably wouldn't be bothering to ask.
I should be able to tell pretty quickly if this pickup has an A4 magnet in it. I'm not really a fan of the A4.

It's supposed to be Alnico V

Yes I know - I was responding to syr2012 saying that it was close to a Mule Bridge.

I have a VHII set and the bridge is 9k, the neck is 8.2k :?
It does seem more like a neck to me. I guess the lead has been cut so you don't have the sticker telling you which it is?
-
Hmmm, might be. IIRC, the VHII necks I have are exactly 8k.
Don't have any non-installed pickups handy to check, but can't you tell the neck or bridge model by the orientation of the logo on the bottom plate relative to the corner the wire comes out of?
Anyone have a boxed calibrated set handy to look at?

no it has a sticker, but it's looped on the wire, so it can slide off. It could have been slid on easily. I can slide it all the way off and keep in intact.

the wire comes out at the top right, looking at the logo right side up. This makes a difference for BKP's? Other pick ups I've used just have the pickup wire come out of the same spot regardless of what position they're made for.

I may be wrong, but I think the baseplates for neck and bridge are the same so you can't tell anything from which way up the logo is. I have an uninstalled CS set at home, I'll check later.

Yes, the baseplates are the same, but if you hold them so the logo is the right way up with the wire coming out top right, then turn it over, a neck model would have the screws at the top, a bridge at the bottom.
I'm probably wrong, but that's how I remember it...

I have a VH2 neck pickup (new in a box ) and it reads 8.2k ohms
-
I wonder if this will be OK as a bridge pickup. I'm going to try it anyway. I'm a little disappointed, but hopefully I'll like it anyway.

Did you bought it new?

Being the one who sold the pickup to the fellow, I'm becoming a bit perplexed by all of this. I ordered the VHII bridge pickup brand new straight from Bare Knuckles back in July, and specifically ordered it for the bridge position. I had it installed in my Gold Epiphone SG for about a month or so, but just felt like it wasn't what I was looking for. I had ordered both a Black Dog and a Riff Raff before for my Orville Les Paul, but really loved the Riff Raff, so I ordered one of those for my SG. Naturally, I still love it, and decided to sell the VHII, since there was no need to have it anymore.
When I had the VHII installed, I could easily tell that it felt much hotter than the Riff Raff or the SD Phat Cat that was in there before...very tight sounding, great harmonics, distorted much quicker, the VHII is a great pickup, just not what I was looking for; I guess you could say it was more of an impulsive/curiosity purchase. My advice would be to just install the pickup and let your ears decide, as someone else observed. I'm sorry the ohm rating wasn't what it's normally specified as on the site, but I can tell you that it feels hotter than the 8.3k or so that you found it to be. You'll never know until you try it, and I'm curious to find out your results. I've got a solid reputation on eBay and would never jip anyone like that. If it in fact was a neck pickup, it would be BKP's fault, and I would have been none the wiser. Please, give the pickup a try and see for yourself!
Regards,
Joseph

I don't suppose you still have the warranty card with the DC reading on it do you?
-
I decided to ask BKP about this and got a reply from Tim - thanks for the quick reply. Great customer service. :)
Yes that would be more in line with a neck spec VHII - no reason at all not to use it as a bridge, it should have a good PAF tone.

Great!
So are you using it on bridge?
-
Well not right at this second. I haven't installed it yet. Soon I will.

Well, the gentleman I sold it to now has the warranty card and everything the pickup originally came with, but I do recall it saying 9.2k on the card. I'd hate to see disappointment out of all this, so I'm hoping he enjoys the pickup. If it truly was a neck version, I had no idea. :?
-
I'd say recheck the meter and measure it again to make sure, also check the wiring as BKP is a bit different to other makes.
-
I've measured it like 50 times. Not sure what you mean by check the wiring.
I have the warrenty card but that's meaning less to me since there's no identifying thing on the pickup to compare it to.

I was just trying to make sure we've eliminated all possible room for error like a dodgy meter or that it's being measured in series rather than parallel (assuming it's 4 conductor).
But I take it that you know what you're doing and you've already covered those bases.
-
it's a single conductor version - - I forgot to mention it

I happen to have a Neck & Bridge VH11 still boxed. Reading the BKP card it states the following:
Bridge 8.9K
Neck 8.2K
Cheers
