i posted recently asking for advice about '70's Marshall JMP's. a certain forum member then contacted me saying he was about to sell one, et voila! my house is one Marshall head heavier! :) it's a 1978 JMP 50 watt Mark II master volume head.
and just days before that i also added a new guitar to the family. i traded in five guitars for this one! it's pretty good though. early '70's Gibson Les Paul Custom. serial number puts it between 1970 and 1972, the volume pots are dated 1980, on one of the tones the number is obscured, but the other is dated 1970. not conclusive, but a fair chance it is a 1970.
not surprisingly, the two together sound magnificent! this really is the classic rock tone. at the minute i'm playing it through the speakers of my Vintage Modern combo. there is an issue though, at fairly high volume through the high input i'm getting a thumpy crackling noise on low notes. if you hit (not too hard) the head with your fist you also get the crackling, so it seems to be from vibrations. i'm gonna take it to see if it can be easily sorted, i'm hoping it's just a loose wire or solder joint. whatever it is must have happened in transit. apart from that one thing, the amp sounds incredible! i'm almost very happy, just have to get this one little niggle sorted.

I'm only getting a pic of the guitar and amp coming up?
-
Sweet Les Paul there!
I was actually going to email you wondering if the crackling was still there..
Tones all good though?
-
sweet :D
-
A classic pairing methinks.
-
Wowser!
Great gear and a real good future investment too!!
HNA/GD!
I'm sure the crackle can be fixed. Maybe a corroded jack or tube pin or sth. The amp gurus will surely jump in.
-
Great stuff mate!
What 5 guitars went? Can't remember what you had????
-
Nice to see a Varitone too! Was that a special order or a retrofit????
-
hey Will, yeah, i'm afraid the noise is still there. the tone of the amp is great apart from that, and it doesn't do it constantly, so hopefully it is just something that's come loose or corroded a little.
Twinfan; yeah, the varitone seems to be original, factory fitted. never saw on on a Les Paul before, and it made the guitar all the more interesting!
i handed over an Epiphone double neck, a PRS SE EG, a 1988 Gibson Les Paul jnr Lite, a 1985 Gibson Q3000 (one of the worst guitars i've ever played!) and a Gibson Blueshawk. the Junior and the Blueshawk i think i might regret, but the Les Paul is great, i think it's something a little special.
oh, and Happy Birthday Fernando! ;)

Nice... congrats indeed. Looks like some Lizzy riffs are the order of the day :D
also, Happy birthday Fernando, hope you had a great day!

I know nowt about Marshalls so can't comment on that, but by gum that's a nice Les Paul! Good catch! :D

Nice catches :D
For years and years, the 2x12 combo version of that head was my dream amp - finally got to play one, and it turned out it just wasn't for me anymore
And another "Happy Birthday Fernando" here :D

2204 FTW!
-
firstly congratulations on your birthday & secondly....A1 one present mate. That looks like an awesome pairing

Interesting 345 control setup on the LP. I had a 71/72 many years ago - it was actually a light guitar but sounded great with the T-Top pickups. Mine had was the one with Gibson embossed in the pickups, but still had the small volute.

Nice score.. I have a 76 100 watter and a 90 Custom with Crawlers. Have you found a cab yet? (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/100_1236.jpg)
