I was in my local tattoo shop yesterday and put down a deposit on a half sleeve from my wrist to my elbow onn my left arm. I am going for a Japanese theme and in my half sleeve I'm having a japanese dragon wraped over a tiger and my artist is going to also create a nice japanese themed background too.
I have been tattooed before on my right arm and eventually over time I will have two full sleeves.
Getting my half sleeve started next thursday and really looking forward to it. I've been told it will probably take several sittings which is understandable because it's a fairly big job. Should be great once it's finished though, dead excited about it.
-
i got the back of my right forearm done a couple of weeks back.
i got a old school style thingy with a polar bear and 'grim north' split above and below, surrounded by a laurel wreath.
I want to get a bunch more but i prefer old school looking stuff and i don't want to go down the route of everything fitting together, i want smaller pieces that stay separate.
where are you getting it done?
i was looking at some tattoo pics recently and found some worrying photos of dudes with throat and hand tattoos and not much else, looks cool with a longsleeve shirt, till you take it off and look like a pussy pretending he's full of tattoos
-
Yeah I am planning on getting some more smaller pieces done on my right arm and then I will eventually connect them all up to be a sleeve.
I know what you mean about hands and neck tattoos, there is this one guy on my street who has some "macho" tribal design on his hands but he has no other tattoos anywhere on his body and to me it just looks a bit silly.
I am getting my ink done by the same guy who did my other tattoos a while back, it's by a guy called Tommy in Perth, Scotland. He is only a 20 minute drive from where I live but he is an excellent artist.
-
i think tattoos are cool but I would NEVER get one!
I can't imagine permanently marking myself on a whim!
-
It should never be on a whim.
I love getting important personal ink.
Good luck with the new sleeve!
-
some of the best stuff ive seen has been done on a whim.
then again also some of the worst.
my housemate has a few, relevant to the time they were done, but i don't think the image means so much.
he does have 'pain' tattooed across his chest but that might be because he once fell 500ft off a cliff. I imagine that was painful, though ive never asked if the tattoo is connected to that incident.
-
thinking in making a half sleeve on the wrist to elbow too, but Maori style... The problem is that tattoos are not as well accepted as other countries here, I remember seeying much more people with tattoo in places out of cloth's covering, as low arms, etc...
I've passed on a public contest, but my company was 100% owned by government, now it's mixed with investors, what mean that I'm safe today but in a year or two, with new elections and probably having the old government back (the ones who start selling it) I'll not be that much as they're always interested in selling patrimony of the state CHEAPLY with stupid terms (no guarantee to employees), my mum still suffers from the public bank sold to Santander...
-
when i was in the tattoo shop getting come colour done on my arm, a guy came in with Maori style tribal on his shoulder and asked for it to be covered up with kerry king style thick pointy tribal.
i guess that stuff is a tattoo artists bread and butter. i know a guy in Antwerp who charges double rates to do tribal cos he finds it so horrible and boring.
the other request i heard a few times while in the shop was for 'baby angels' which i think is the Essex term for cherubs. best idea i heard was some guy who wanted a Japanese style carp in a pond with flowers and such also in Japanese style going up to the clouds where he'd have 'baby angels' flying around. in my head that would be two different styles of tattoo blended together. i couldn't comprehend it.
-

Why on earth would anyone visit Perth to be tattooed and see anyone other than Gary at Inkredible Kreations? :?
Other than his waiting list, obviously, he's probably the finest tattooer in Scotland by a vast distance.
Hell, especially for Japanese work, Skin Deep put him in their top 10 Japanese style artists worldwide a couple years ago, and he's only got better.
-
i had this talk with an apprentice who is a friend of mine working on the wirral. we talked about how tattoo artists are almost like the new rock stars.
When i was in belgium i got asked if my stuff was by Steve Byrne. A lot of my friends have stuff by him.
Also, London is home to Frith Street which has a crazy rep, but i dont think id ever go there. I guess London has a few places with good artists. I think Tom Hooper used to tattoo out of Frith Street too. I got friends with stuff by him also.
I'd like to get something by Human Furnace from Ringworm maybe. haha.
-
Yep. Miama ink is the worst thing that's ever happened to tattooing. Now there's scores of imbeciles up and down the nation scratching the shit out of their stupid friends cause they think they can be the next Kat Von D and hang out with some celebrities. Quite why anyone wants to be an arrogant, mediocre tattooer is beyond me, mind.
-
i only got sky this summer and all the silly questions i get asked about my tattoo's suddenly make sense. No its not a memorial, no it doesnt really have any meaning, no i didnt walk in off the street and start getting tattooed 10 minutes later!!
just trying to decide what to do next now the wedding is out of the way!
-
you got your wife's name on you? i hope you not, that kind of thing is always a curse.
-
no way!! i onyl mentioned teh wedding becausse that meant there was no tattoo money available
although my mum said something funny the other day. Her new pagan husband is getting a tattoo of her face on his arm... i managed to listen to this without laughing, not sure how. She then told me that i couldnt say anything (wasnt going to ;) ) since i had a tattoo of my wife on my arm, at which point i did have to laugh a bit the incredibly detailed womans face that takes up the top of my right arm shares no resemblence to laura in any way at all.. seriously, not even close... neiher is the pin-up on my leg. its funny the way people interpret things :)

One tattoo artist that is very good and very nice (when I met her in the 5min I had) is Claudia in Amsterdam:

If I ever hit Europe again I think I'll have something done by her, love that style
-
I got my arm piece done in February and booked in to finish it off on the 18th. We need to dig up the old show your tattoos thread, I'm wanting a half sleeve but haven't finalised the design yet.
My tatt is taken from an album cover, and the most people's comments are 'oh you will be gutted if they ever split up!'. They shut up when i mention yes they DID split up, two years before I got inked.

this is where i got my first couple...

everyone there is cool. my bro simon did mine. i've known him for a while before i ever thought about getting anything done. so it was cool to have a friend start me off.

Most of my mates have had tattoos from Lal Hardy, or at least, either him or the other people at new wave tattoos.

I thought I was going to be all funny and post that exact comment. You beat me to it by a week!
-
heading to the tattoo shop in a moment to get my half sleeve started. I will probably just get the outline done today and go back in a couple of weeks for colour and shading, but we'll se how it goes :)
-
Funny thing. Yesterday I thought about starting a tattoo thread, but it's already going :D
I haven't got any tattoos yet and maybe I'll never get some, but I really like the idea of a half or full sleve on my left arm. My personal oppinion on tattoos is that they should match so if I decide to get one I'd rather go with the sleeve option instead of getting a smaller piece.
Do I have the guts... and the money... :?
-
do it.
its doesnt hurt at all....
-

Actually I don't really fear the pain. I haven't really figured out what kind of motif I would want and I guess I'm also a bit affraid that someday I'll regret getting a tattoo...
Still the idea appeals me.
-
i was the same as you.
things happened in my life that meant i was pretty sure i'd never regret the first one i got.
after getting one i think its real easy to hooked. you don't have to have deeps meanings for each one. finding a good artist to help you out is the trick. i was lucky in that im friends with a good one, so i naturally went to him first.
just check a few shops out and get some ideas.
im afraid of the pain... in places... haha.
before my band went to the US, our singer came to my house, and got an eagle flying with bolt cutters tattooed onto one side of his belly. top of the drawing hits the floating ribs, and the other side goes half way across his belly, and the bottom goes to his waist. he was lying on my bed getting it done, punching the bed, yelling, stopping every 2 mins, chain smoking... it looked pretty painful!
i hear getting your knees done sucks too.
-
i wasnt ever worried about regretting it, but that doesnt mean i wont. i think in the long run i would rather regret doing something than regret never getting around to doing the things i really wanted to do
-

That might be a very good point, Wez. I should just get a half or full sleeve and stop my worries. And if I ever regret, I'm pretty sure that someone has invented the tattoo remover :D
-
Ok, made my mind up. I think. I change my mind far too much on these things but finally decided I'm ok with getting inked below my elbow. Still unsure about the whole 'unified' sleeve idea though, don't think it's me.
-
unified as in a whole singular work around your forearm?
i prefer the 'getting a bunch of different sh*t' look.
-

Yeah i've realised i like small, simple, different pieces as opposed to one big arty piece. Then again I hate most tattoos, i'm a picky bar-steward.
-
I got all the outline work done on my half sleeve today, it took just a little over 2 hours. I have the dragon wraped around my forearm and my artist added some dark clouds and some lightning bolts and I am really chuffed with how it's turned out so far. Quite a fair bit of the tattoo was done freehand as well which was pretty cool. There are two small gaps in the design which I'm not sure what we're going to put in there, we discussed the idea of adding some cherry blossoms and maybe a lotus flower too which would be pretty cool.
This one was more painfull than the last ones I got on my right arm but that is probably because it was a longer sitting. I'm going back once the outline has healed to get the colour and shading added. I'll try and get some pics up soonish. Very happy with how it's going so far!
-

I don't think I'll ever regret not having tattoos, but that's a very good point.
I suspect, unfortunately, in 20 or 30 years I'll be an old man with lots of regrets about things I didn't do. :(
-
Ok bitches lets see those tattoos again, the last thread got derailed by some Dimebag talk.
Mine are simple and I like them like that. Left arm is the cover of Aereogrammes last album, and just below my right elbow is a very nerdy reversible reaction symbol that is extended all the way round my arm. Fresh as of Wednesday.

Looks good bagermark! I like nice and simple tattoos.
As I said before, I'll try and get some pics of mine soonish. I have booked in to get the colour added to my half sleeve on thursday so I will probably wait until the colour is done until I post a pic of it. On the inside of my other forearm I have a tattoo of a treble clef with four music notes around it.
I have a couple of more planned but it will be well into the new year before I get them done.
-
i like things you can see across a room, fine detail is great but he first thing to age and turn to a blur.
so i have my large lillies and if you can see my full arm you see lilly herself ( no meaning other than liking certain shapes and women - is that not enough???)
gretchin is on my leg and i see her less but love her the same. no meaning on this either, no-one dies and there is no LA ink story...other than the fact my logo is in the tailpiece
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/tattoo/nt3.jpg) its a bit strange, my original idea behind a tattoo is 'i am finally able to charge for this stuff, lets get my logo as a tattoo to celebrate'. but then i went for stuff i liked instead..... i though my logo could date but a pretty face never will. infact everytime i think about what tattoo i want next i struggle to come up with an idea which isnt a pin-up or other womanly figure. i have a few comic book ideas - but thyey still involve strong powerfull women
-
Looking good Wez and Dmoney. I really like arty tattoos.
I guess I'll not be the odd one out and I'll post pics of mine. I don't think the pictures really do them justice though, they look better when you see them in person, and it's also pretty difficult taking pictures of your own forearm.
This is the treble clef with music notes around it that I got done near the begining of the year:
Here is my japanese dragon half sleeve. Like I said it's still not completed and I am going in to get colour added this coming thursday:

The two spaces are going to be filled in with some cherry blossoms and a Lotus flower.
-
Some really cool stuff there. That dragon is looking good even without colour IB, it's going to look bloody fantastic when it's finished!
I had my first tatt in June, and seriously can't wait to be able to afford to go back and get more! I was warned it's addictive. I kinda took it with a pinch of salt, but my buddy wasn't lying - it is!

our singer has a heart with EHG in the middle for EyeHateGod that he did himself on his big toe.
that looks like a few pennies worth of work.

Metal As Fuck
It's an in-joke about elitists and dafties in the metal community.

Thanks. And yes, but along with borderline addiction to whisky and cigars, alongside festivals and guitars, the money is difficult. Plus the chap who does all my work is a good friend, so I tend to be quite blase about getting round to things when he's very busy with a huge waiting list. So it's all kinda "fit me in when you've time" and then things get moved back and moved back.
Left arm is next. Likely in one sitting at a convention.
-
Ive got a Led Zeppelin based tatt on my left upper arm. Looking to get a largish piece/half sleeve done on my right arm featuring Gibson Guitars, Marshall Amps, Music, Pin Up girls and a few satanic/occult references thrown in for good measure.

Ghostly bump ffrom the dead.
I've finally pulled myself together and ordered myself a tattoo date. I'm so excited (to quote the Pointer Sisters).
What about the half sleeve that originally started this post, Ironbeast? Any pics of that?
-
Still want an 'Ace of Spades' tatoo - have done for years.

And will you be quoting the Pointer Sisters in the tattoo? :P

I suppose it will be a tattoo that he just can't hide.
-
Ha ha ha. You're really funny guys. I won't be quoting Pointer Sisters in the tattoo. I really like "I'm So Excited", buuuut not THAT much :D
-
I've got a few new ones myself. Not sure if I want topless photos of me floating around the net though. This will do for now though. Prize to the person who guesses what it is...
-
I'll assume the double bar round your arm isn't in line with the traditional Japanese meaning, and that you haven't been to jail for it :P
-

Nope that's part of my chemical equilibrium symbol. I was aware of the japanese meaning but couldn't find any reference pictures so I got what I wanted anyway.
-
What about the half sleeve that originally started this post, Ironbeast? Any pics of that?
I finally got it finished after 3 sittings about 4 weeks ago. It took about 7 hours altogether.
I'll try and get some pics up soonish.
-
Got the tattoo done last weekend. Hven't taken any pics of it yet, but they'll be hitting this thread in the nearest future :D
