Title: pickup advice (jackson guitar/metal/low tuning)
Post by: lolthrash on November 09, 2009, 03:56:22 AM
I decided to start a new thread as I didn't want to hijack another's!
Same question, as below:
Those in the know, I have a Jackson DK2M which has an alder body, maple neck and maple fretboard, licensed floyd rose bridge, 11-60 strings and seymour duncan blackout pickups (the original ones). I'm in the same boat as user:kylendm in terms of the bands sounds he's describing (to a certain degree) and this guitar is mostly tuned to drop B. I also play a randall rm100. Would the nailbomb be best for me? (perhaps with a ceramic magnet?) I find the blackout too "boxy" in a sense, I had trouble describing it on another forum as well, but it's not the sound I'm after. I want something that'll sing with smooth sustain in the highs and be really tight and defined with a lot of attack in the lows.

Thanks guys.

I have a Nailbomb set in a DK2M & it slays, although I don't detune that guitar.  It's punchy, crunchy, powerful, clear & aggressive.

I'm guessing a Ceramic Nailbomb (which is available as a custom order), Ceramic Warpig (ditto) or a Painkiller would be even tighter...

I wonder whether a ceramic nailbomb, or a painkiller would suit more..
Am terribly tempted to get a painkiller purely because of how much I love Judas Priest haha, I don't know which will be better though!

Ok, so i've changed my mind I think. I'm thinking to swap the purpose of my les paul and dinky, and tune the dinky back up to standard with a regular set of 10's, and make the les paul (sig epi les paul custom) the de-tuned guitar.
Anyone have any recommendations for those two?

Yes, I still reckon a Nailbomb calibrated set (std Alnico bridge) is the way forward on the DK2M.  Mine (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16544.0) has a NB set & I love it.  Holy Diver would also work as it's great in alder.

For the LP, Cold Sweat would be my first choice if I was going to mega-detune & wanted tightness.
