I tried RIPS (Reinforced Plain Strings) Strings on my SG today, they are great. They have some brass or sth windings on the ball ends. Much more tone and sustain.
Not sure they would work on wrap arounds, but I think they'll be my new standard on Gibson style bridges!
Anyone else use them, love or hate them?

I used to use them with the Kahler on my Hamer, but never noticed any difference tone-wise.

Did they do the job for the Kahler though? I have had a couple of high e strings go, just around the wrapping / ball area

They were much better than any of the other reinforced strings I tried, still used to break high Es sometimes though.
Ernie Ball used the extra windings, other manufacturers soldered the wrappings near the ball end, which made it stiff and more prone to breaking (IMO).
I don't think anyone else makes reinforced strings nowadays.

i pre-bend the string to match the cam before soldering the wrappings - stiffness aint too much of a problem then and it does give the strings a bit of extra life

you solder them...?

I pre-bend, but haven't tried soldering. Quite hesitant to on the newtone strings as I have had one break just after the ball :?
