Given you've stated some prices in dollars, you've missed two large factors out of the price..
Shipping
Customs
-
Add about 25% for shipping and customs.
Looks like a great axe! Do it!
-
where are you planning on getting the parts from?
-
yeah the price is gonna rocket after all that stuff isn't it? :P i calculated it all this morning from warmoth prices. Its probably not actually gonna happen, I just enjoy designing my dream guitars, and figuring how much they're gonna cost - and this one seemed like a bloody good deal - a signature guitar of my two favourite guitarists in one! now yu've all gone and reminded me of reality - yu've spoiled my fun! hang your heads in shame!
-
looks cool!
-
If you have done your maths and its something you really want to do go for it.I had great fun and learned alot more about the guitar recently when i built my own.All the best.
-
Dude I reckon you caould at least knock £200 off that
make your own body =£20
make your own neck (birdseye =£60
I bought an ibanez edge lo-pro and gotoh tuners for =£120
PAINT AT $185!!!????? get plasticote spray cans =£20
other ancilliaries lets say =£50
BKP VH11 =£100
=£ 370???
I built my first guitar when I was 16 and although its not fantastic becasue the neck was a bit thick and I have a cheap FR copy but I still play it as my main guitar.
as long as your an OK woodworker and have a router, jigsaw/bandsaw, drill, cabinetscr@per/spokeshave, plane, angle grinder then your fine.
just my Idea

LOL - build my own? nooo way i'm afraid - i wouldn't know scale sizes, where to put the frets, how to put them in, how to carve a neck or how to make a body, how to route anything. to top it all off i have no tools other than saws and screwdrivers, lol. Plus in the end it'd be nowhere near as high quality, it wouldn't have as good hardware, the shape wouldn't be right, it'd feel horrible, and it'd never get used. Warmoth all the way I'm afraid... unless you'd like to teach me how to use the tools to build guitars - i'd LOVE to do that...
-
I came across these guys before Indy, they split off from Warmoth 5 years ago:
http://www.usacustomguitars.com/
the sites a little less overwhelming than the Warmoth beast...
-
Great link Willo. I like their Jazzmaster and Jaguar bodies. I feel GAS coming.
Hmm, Jag with P90's and tune-o fixed bridge?
-
Well i started with no knoledge and it turned out ok. If you build it yourself then the prices I used were for VERY high quality hardware, better than on stock guitars and its alot cheaper, pus who can say they made their own guitar from a plank? 8)
www.projectguitar.com and its accompaning forum are very helpful
It just needs some willing.
I have only made 2 and already people say I should start up a busyness which i might after I come back from Australia, and Im not THAT talented as a woodworker.
Anyway just a thought.

That looks .... interesting. Actually, pretty cool looking.
I would never build my own guitar, either. I can't afford to do it more than once, so I let the experts do their thing!
-
Dont forget that there a number of UK makers who can assist with self assembly projects.
We are not so proud that we need to make it all ourselves
On this Forum alone we have myself, Legra guitar and Laz Gagic and a few others as well.
Sometimes a mix of Ebay, luthier and self assembly can work well
Just my £0.02

Wow - where are you buying your body wood - £20!!!!!!
That would be way cheap for a piece of American Red Alder.
Here is another vital ingredient to the mix: (we actually stock this if anyone is interested)

Hmm, Jag with P90's and tune-o fixed bridge?
Jazzmaster with P90s and a Wilkinson trem
Actually, this whole build your own thing sounds remarkably interesting. I just think it is incredibly daunting, to start with a block of wood and say 'Thats going to be a guitar in a few months time'.
Still, its definitely a potential idea. Its reassuring to know that luthiers would help out if in trouble.
-
i'm sorry.. but that's just...
so not my thing... but frankenrhoads comes to ming LOL.. looks so damn wrong
i say call up some dudes in the UK and get a couple of quotes, then compare to the warmoth
-
I get my wood from a local timber yard (Yandals). there isn't so much alder there though, you gotta be quite luck on that, but I prefere other woods anyway such as poplar, maple/birdseye, sepelle.
yea it defininately is a mission, there are times when you hate it (e.g. router catches and destroys a humbucker rout), and times when you love it (the body has just been cut and routed and is starting to look like a proper guitar).
Actually though Ive been very tempted to get some parts made for me as sometimes I don't have some of the tools or patience to do a really top-notch job and Feline guitars have some very reasonable prices for brilliant craftmanship, i don't know about the other two as I havn't researched their stuff yet.

:D where did you get the Stencils or did you design body shapes free hand ?
:D 8)

Dude i didn't draw that one, i think davey gave me this link - so thanks man!!! http://www.jcfonline.com/resources/csgen/JCFCustomShop.htm
-
please use another headstock ;)
-
please use another headstock ;)
please use an entirely diferent guitar.. and paintjob, lol
-
i partially agree with davey here, i think if the neck and headstock matched the body it would look killer, but atm it looks a little ghastly :? . if u just changed fretboard to ebony and headstock to black or red it would be just fine :)

That headstock is ugly as!! (in my opinion)
-
My source for air dried ash I get off cut boards which would make 3 Dinkys (if you're careful with your cutting) or probably 4 rhoads Vs for £28!! Big lesson of building though, get them to machine plane it for you
I got a really nice pre-slotted and radiused fingerboard from craft supplies for about £18.
If you're daunted by the whole neck/trussrod/headstock thing you can always buy a neck and build your own body. A V wouldn't be that stressful to cut by hand really, and requires no contouring, so the only tools you'd need are a router and a drill press (both of which you'd probably be able to borrow from someone).
A good source for cheap parts is www.axesrus.co.uk

That Jackson Charvel custom generator is the ultimate in time wasting toy!!!!
Not to mention the fact that I now want a blue quilt RR with bengal stencilling and zebra Pups
-
Indy: You used to be cool! What the hell is up with that paint job? It looks shitee and a half - especially on a V...
If you are gonna do it, at least pick a paintjob that doesn't make your audience throw up and then go home when you use it in a gig :drink:
