Title: New to BKP. Please help me with pickup choice!
Post by: Neuro on November 16, 2009, 08:50:31 PM
Hello everyone.

I am looking for some pickups for my mahogany Les Paul (wenge neck, ebony fretboard).  I would like some super hot and heavy pickups for heavy metal in the likes of Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath.  I need a good combo of super heavy thump but also some tear-your-face-off thrashiness, but I also need good cleans and good punk rock distortion as well.  I need leads to cut through the mix as well.  I also play in standard and D tunings.  I have been looking at the Nailbombs and the Warpigs and I can't choose between either of them, with either ceramic of alnico mags!  However, I do what to go with a Calibrated Set of either of these mentioned pickups.  Any help here is certainly appreciated!

Painkiller. If all else fails, contact Tim, he knows his pickups.

I contacted Tim and he recommends the Nailbombs.  The nailbombs sound great.  I just want to make sure that the Nailbombs sound really aggressive.

Sweet.  That is exactly what I wanted to hear.  From what Tim said it seems like the Nailbombs are also very versatile, with great cleans, rock distortions and huge metal distortions.

What is the difference between a ceramic Nailbomb and an alnico Nailbomb?  What would suit my application better?

Quoting from another thread: "You get increased tightness and saturation, a bit more cut in the high end, and the mids fall back a little." The output is higher in the ceramic version and it's a somewhat more compressed too.

Which to go for..well, I don't really know wenge as a tonewood. What did Tim suggest about the magnet? How's your guitar acoustically?

Ah... I didn't realize that I didn't state that this is a build that I am doing through Warmoth.  I am trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start buying a bunch of expensive gear.

I have heard that wenge is a bright wood (as opposed to warm) that is played raw (no finish).  The wood is supposed to be heavy but fast due to its "comb-like" texture.

Hope this helps Vilches!

I just received an email from Tim and he suggests the ceramic Nailbomb.  Thanks for the description, it certainly helps!  Sounds like ceramic is the way to go for tight, thumping palm muting.
