Title: this seems a girly thing to ask..
Post by: _tom_ on November 12, 2005, 08:37:31 PM
..but I need to know! How the hell can I get my hair to grow quicker?! Its been at the same length for ages and it just aint long enough. There must be some magic way! At the minute I trim the ends every few weeks with my razor whilst I'm shaving   doesnt really help much tho!

My god, what have I become?!

I used to have that worry Willo - now I just worry about the day when I have to shave it all to a no.4 to level out the baldness  :(

There's a critical mass in long hair - you look like a choir boy for ages and then it happens.

Haha I think I'm at that stage. Its just past my eyes or level depending on how curly it decides to be, I hate it! I want it to be crazy long!

dont cut the ends man, just let it grow.

i needed about 1 year and a bit more to go from short to a respectable lenght.. and the time inbetween realy REALY sucks.

but my hair grows pretty damn fast. i had it down to my waist in about three years time. then i cut it two years ago (or was that last year. i forget) till it was a little above half my back. now it's between my waist and half of my back again

yeah, i'm assuming shaving the ends of the hair is where you're going wrong- cutting it = making it shorter

Yeah I only recently started it, as apparently just trimming the ends a bit makes it grow quicker for some reason. Stimulates the hair maybe? I dunno haha

even if I had the patience to go through the inbetween stage for over a year, it'd still look cr@p as my hair's so curly - so mine's a #3 back and sides, brushed forward, flick at the front  8)  (I'm not happy until it looks sortof 80s action hero like   )

i know that actual shaving (i.e. close to the skin) stimulates the growth, and makes it grow back thicker- don't know about shaving near the ends- i suppose it might...

Ooh I dunno, I just asked girls I know and they say to get a trim every so often haha. No way am I paying for a hairdresser to go and cut too much off (its happened before!), so I thought I'd just razor the ends for free..

Post by: nuntius on November 13, 2005, 12:31:45 AM
You trim the ends every so often to prevent split ends...  Or to get rid of them if they're already there.

I have a no2 and even I know that ^

Edit - thinking about it, using a razor against the hair probably isn't that great for it.. it's probably more of a drag+tear for cutting length instead of a clean precise cut which you'd get with a pair of scissors...

It's just a guess, but you're probably better off using a pair of scissors.  You'd be able to be neater with scissors either way anyway..

mine gets to a certain length and stops - anyone who saw me at musiclive knows that i'm trying to make it long - but right now i look like a bloody idiot! cutting it to make it grow is a wives tale! doesnt work

You gotta shave it to encourage growth. Of course, that'll set you back a few months, but if you shave it a few times it'll come back thicker, darker, and faster.

You'd think that shaving your head a few times would give it the message that you don't want any hair, but no, it gets even more determined to grow. Life is like that sometimes.

Do I dare throw my two pence worth in as a long time hair farmer???/

There are in my opinion many things that can help/affect growth:

In no particular order:

Genetics - this will play the biggest factor

Diet- this can affect many things - hair growth is one
Take selected vitamin suppliments if you feel the need
Vitamin E should not be overlooked

Scalp massage- increases blood flow and will in theory assist
(you can do it to yourself as well)

Avoid blow drying and too much styling product (can dry hair out too much and make it break)
I recommend cutting only to keep split ends at bay and to also avoid looking like "Cousin It" from the Adams Family

Ok thats enough  from this 1980s throwback

Your hair is just dead cells.  Cutting the ends is not going to do anything.  Split ends or no split ends it dont make a difference.  its all genetic.
its gonna take time.  dont cut it because all you’re doing is making the process longer..  just leave it and try not to think about it.  it will get there in time. ..... and when that time comes your gonna want to cut it.....lol....

cutting hair does not make it grow thicker, it just gives the impression of it being thicker because the end is no loger tapered to a point, its flat.

I think I can guess who it is, but I aint sayin'! ;)

When I had mine long, it'd never grow that much past the bottom of my neck/top of the spine, but it was bloody fine, curly, and looked incredibly gurly... Hoho!

I then got it dreaded (it was 1990ish), and then it proceeded to grow down to my arse! I had to cut it because I kept sitting on my hair, and nearly breaking my neck when I sat down (that and the "Dave Lister" jokes, oh and leaving Uni and having to get a bloody job! :( ).

I've been growing my hair since the start of this year and it's just down to my chin now. I only cut it once so that the hair at the back didn't grow longer that the front (looks a bit neater). I wash my hair every other day so it doesn't get really greasy but also so my hair has time to sort itself out after washing (too dry). Whatever you do, don't let your girlfriend cut your hair. I made that mistake and i looked like a lesbian, i totally regret doing that. If i didn't do that my hair would be pretty long now and i would look super cool.

Yup, receding skin'ead! ;)

No, that should really be:

"Ageing rocker who had to get a hair cut, and so decided to cut it all off so that it'd be more managable and cheaper on the haircare products (but a goatee compensates for the loss of hair length)".

;)

Receding hairline + ponytail = mixing desk operator or producer.

Long hair on guys attracts loads of attention especially when its not worn in a pony tail. I used to get random insults on the street when i lived back in Hull hehe.
Hair grows quicker when its cold so move to the North Pole for a few months if you wanna grow it really fast  :D

I got my cut not long ago for the first time in 5 years, only a trim tho my metal brothers! but the bar-stewards took too much! so i now wear it in a pony tail until it becomes proper head banging length again.

Peace

what would you classify as "proper head banging length"?

Yeah, what happened to all the people with long hair? THey all seemed to disappear overnight a couple of years ago! I'd really like to grow mine long again, but I do think I'd look like a right T*** word I mentioned earlier, due to it looking more like King Buzzo/Shame Embury than being long.

*sigh*  :(

definitely dont keep chopping the ends off yourself, but then make sure you dont have split ends as that looks nasty. mine took about two years before it was happy with it, but then got bored of it so i had it chopped before i went to uni. now i'm at the stage where i'm thinking of doing the honourable thing and shaving it.

By honourable I assume you mean conforming to workplace expectations???
Admittedly sometimes work places and long hair dont mix- I always got away with it wherever I worked though.
It certainly shouldn't be seen as a reflection of your ability to work or how hard you work.
Some bosses don't quite get this and associate it with a drop out/hippy kind of attitude, which is so out of date and out of touch.
Some of the hardest working folks I know have long hair
(Tim and myself for example- but then we are SELF EMPLOYED)

The same thing goes for my rock n' roll-ish hairstyle. It's not like I have a foot long pompadour or something, it's just side burns and a load of gel to keep my hair combed back. Still my employer bitched about it....and my leather jacket.......and my bicycle for Ch**** sake!

I guess they only want people who look like Jehova's witnesses or something.

They'll go mental if I get a tattoo.
